"Four over-fed doctors carouse at a table laden with rounds of beef and decanters. Each holds up a glass and gives a toast. The man at the head of the table (left): 'Long life to our Central Board--R |. "in medio tutissimus bibis [for ibis]"--as we say in the classics'. His vis-à-vis: 'May we preserve our health by bleeding the country'. The man in back view: 'I drink Reform in our Hospitals, may they close their doors against the public & the poor die in Hackney coaches'. On the back of his chair: 'Board & Lodging'. His vis-à-vis: 'I pledge myself to keep some cases afloat'. From their coat-pockets hang big bloated purses. Beside the first speaker a long scroll hangs from a writing-table (left): 'Post Mortem Appearances, want of Employment Poverty Starvation Quarantine Stagnation Distress Blue Ruin' [gin]. On the floor (right): 'While Drs differ & deny--The Country bleeds & patients die'. Above the principal doctor hangs a picture of a bottle (blue) emitting smoke, and with head, arms, and legs, capering menacingly. This (a symbol of humbug, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14507) is 'Contagious Cholera'. "Sportsmen in a bare breakfast parlour, with a small round table on which are tea-pot and cups, a loaf, and a wine-bottle. A stout man (left) sits beside the table, holding a wine-glass, his right hand on a dog's head; a boy kneels at his feet fastening on spurs; a yawning valet dresses his hair. He talks to a man standing on the extreme left, holding his hat and whip. Another man, a whip under his arm, stands at the table cutting a piece of bread. A short man sits with his back to the table examining the lock of his gun. Two men enter from the right, yawning violently. A pair of coupled dogs (right) prance in their eagerness to start. "A very fat man sits (left) at a dinner-table holding a knife and fork and about to take a mouthful. He gazes apprehensively at his wife (right), who has risen from the table, overthrowing her chair and a bottle of 'Gin' whose contents stream to the ground. She leans forward, clenching her outstretched right fist, a glass in her left hand, shouting, "You Think indeed!! You Brute, I wonder at your Impudence, never was so Mild so Meek a Temprd Woman so Ill used as I am, & all because I'm the most Tender Affectionate Wife living, but I wont be treated so I wont no, I'll tear your Eyes out first, I know what you want, to set me in a Passion you do, but I wont be in a Passion to please you, you Cross Ill Temperd Quarrelsome, Passionate Wretch.' Abstract:
A man with a queue wig and wearing spectacles (right) sits expectantly at a small round tea table set for two; his hands on the table glench his knife and fork, his napkin tied around his neck like a bib. He leans forward as he eyes the food approach carried by a woman in a mop cap and wearing spectacles who stands full lengh (left) holding a long handled frying pan heaped high with dark ashes. He says, "Come, come, Dame is'nt my eggs and bacon done yet. I'm literally famish'd in waiting." She replies, "I am very sorry to inform your worship that just as I had done 'em so nice all this here soot fell into the pan."
