Abstract:
"A group of men standing outside a dilapidated building, part of which is visible on the right. One, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, holds in his left hand a torn paper on which parts of words are visible: "[Pet]itio[n] ... [Fr]eehold[rs] . . . Minist[ry] . . ." His right forefinger is extended as if laying down the law to his companions. On his right stands a man holding his chin with an expression of deep thought. In his right hand is (?) a turncock. Next him (left) is an artisan, listening intently, his breeches unfastened at the knee, his stockings ungartered; he holds a short hammer and is probably a shoemaker. Behind (right) a man wearing a waistcoat over a ruffled shirt, but no coat, lounges against the stump of a tree and listens open-mouthed. On the top of the stump is an open dish of food which a dog is eating, his head twisted backwards in a peculiar manner. A companion print to British Museum satire no. 6878: The country justice. Inside a watch-house, a burly watchman stands (left) facing an elderly constable who sits frowning in his arm-chair. He holds out a broken lantern and points to a thin, fashionably dressed, and apparently drunken man who stands beside him with closed eyes, holding a large stick in his left hand. Next to the constable is a clerk writing at a desk with a slanted top. The room is lit by a lantern slung from the roof. A map on the wall apparently represents the roads of the parish and the beats of the watchmen. A fire burns in a grate (right).

A satirical coat of arms, the supporters of which are a lion with the head of Queen Caroline (left) and a unicorn with the head of George IV (right). The crest is a crown, topped with a dog. The text above reads "The lioness and unicorn fighting for the crown," and within a banner at the bottom is the phrase "Dieu et mon droit." The shield at center contains four small scenes, labeled (clockwise) "Decapitation," "Martial Law," "Coronation," and "Reform"; the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" appears on a belt surrounding the circular shield. On the left edge of the design, a John Bull figure stands on a pedestal inscribed "Constitution" and holds a spear with a banner reading "Justice" at top; on the right edge, a soldier stands on a pedestal inscribed "Despotism" and carries a sword and firearm. A blindfolded figure of Justice, holding a sword and scales, sits in the lower left; the contrasting figure in the lower right is a fat demon holding a scourge and a snake, a bottle next to him

Eventually, he resolves to have a prudent young woman as housekeeper and companion, gradually feeling some attachment to her and becoming completely under her influence. At age 60, as he begins to feel ill, and "grows rapidly worse, has his will made in her favour, and makes an exit."
