"Thurlow as Balaam, riding (right to left) on an ass with the head of Pitt, is confronted by Fox (left) holding a sword with a serpentine blade and the shield of Britannia. The ass says, "Am not I thy Pitt=ifull Ass; upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine". Thurlow, on a larger scale than Fox and the ass, which is much overweighted, wears his Chancellor's wig and gown and holds his mace against his right shoulder; he looks fixedly at Fox. A low and irregular stone wall forms a background. Beneath the design is etched: 'And they came unto Balaam and said unto him, thus saith Balak the Templeite, let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me, for I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore I pray thee, curse me this People. Balaam rose up in the Morning and saddled his Ass, and went with the Lords of the Bed-Chamber, now the Man of the People stood in the way for an adversary against him, and when the Ass saw the Man of the People, he fell down under Balaam and Balaam's anger was kindled; and he smote the Ass with the Mace.'"--British Museum online catalogue

A mock coat of arms, perhaps for George IV, that possibly served as the tailpiece or other illustration to a verse-satire on the trial of Queen Caroline. The shield is vase-shaped and includes a mug of beer at center, tents and cannons on either side of the mug, a settee below the mug, three ships at top, scales of justice with "vice" outweighing "virtue" below the ships, and a ram at bottom. Surmounting the shield is a donkey with a owl on its back, the owl wearing a tall conical hat; the donkey stands upon a "log", a volume with "bill" on its spine, a chess board, playing cards, sheets of paper labeled "address", and a cross above which "liturgy petition" is written. Plants are seen on either side of shield; below the shield are banners in which the Latin phrases "furiis in censa feror" and "vir tutis sub umbra viti um" are written

Title supplied by curator., Date and place of publication from British Museum website., Description from British Museum: A satire [of] political ignorance set in a country barber-surgeon's shop in which the people have been given the heads of animals. At centre left, an old woman with the head of a cat, is being bled by a man with the head of an elephant whose hand is on her left breast, a monkey-headed boy holds a basin to catch the blood spurting from her arm. Behind them a man, with a boar's head wearing a work-apron reads from the Grub Street Journal to a man with the head of an ass and a bell round his neck. In the centre a cat-man sitting on a barrel holding a shaving dish has his whiskers trimmed by a barber with an ape's head on top of which is a flamboyant hat with long feathers. An ape-man behind waits his turn, and a man with two wooden legs and a crutch leaves through an open door. Overhead on the left is a projecting sign from which hangs a board showing an owl beneath which is written "Shave & Bleed for A Peny". Stuffed creatures hang from the ceiling: a grotesque fish, an eel with gaping moth, and an ape. The wall at the rear has been chalked with tallies and three wigs hang from it. A table in the foreground on the right has pulled teeth and various barbers' instruments on it.
