He listens with a reckless smile to one of the Jews; the other peers through spectacles at 'Title Deeds'. The Jews are old, thin, and bearded, but one wears a bag-wig. On the ground by the latter (r.) is a paper: 'Money Lent on good Securities. Annuities Jointers [sic] bought and Sold.' By the spendthrift's chair lies a greyhound. The background is a wall closely covered with pictures in ornate frames, which combine to tell the young man's story. Above his head is a 'Prodigal Son' kneeling among the swine; above this a reclining Venus is partly visible, and below, 'Diane', a horse and foal. Gamesters at a 'Hazard Table' hangs above 'Sir Matthew Mite', a miser with money-bags, weighing coin in sacks. Below this is a bust portrait of 'Sir Peter Plumb' in a tie-wig. "An aged surgeon leans over a bag of instruments on a table (right), selecting a knife; he wears an old-fashioned wig, hat, coat, &c. A pretty girl seizes him by the arm; she shouts at him, pointing behind her to his subject, a young man lying on a trestle-table, fully dressed and apparently in perfect health, who has just wakened, horrified. In an open cupboard stands a skeleton (left). On the wall is a notice: 'A Course of Anatomical Lectures accompanied with Dissections will be delivered tommorrow Even[ing] by Professer Sawbone.' [An early use of the word 'Sawbone'. Partridge gives the date as from c. 1835, citing Sam Weller in 'Pickwick' (1837).] Two lighted candles stand on the table. "Lady Archer sits in profile to the right before her dressing-table, applying rouge to her cheek with a brush. Her notoriously painted cheek is blotched with drink. She is dressed for driving, wearing a coat of masculine cut, and a skirt which is short enough to show stockings above laced half-boots. A high-crowned hat trimmed with feathers is poised on her hair; on her vulture-like nose glasses are perched, her profile being reflected in the draped mirror.
