"A scaffold extends across the foreground: Fox raises an axe to strike the neck of George III, whose head is held by Sheridan. The scaffold is surrounded by a dense and cheering mob. On the right is the gate of the 'Crown & Anchor' tavern, and from two projecting lamp-brackets swing the bodies of Queen Charlotte and Pitt. The houses of the Strand recede in perspective and terminate in Temple Bar, with two heads on spikes; clouds of smoke appear to come from burning houses east of Temple Bar. On the clouds a meretricious Liberty sits enthroned and triumphant. The King's neck rests on a narrow block, his shaved head appears bald, his legs are held up by Horne Tooke, who stands on the left, saying: "O, such a day as this, so renown'd so victorious, Such a day as this was never seen Revolutionists so gay; - while Aristocrats notorious, Tremble at the universal glee." From Tooke's pocket projects a paper: 'Petition of Horne Tooke' (against the return of Fox and Hood for Westminster, see British Museum Satires No. 7690). The King, who supports himself on his hands, says, "What! What! What! - what's the matter now". Fox, enormously stout, straddles behind the King, full face his axe raised in both hands; he wears a mask with large circular eye-holes and fox's ears; he says: "Zounds! what the devil is it that puts me into such a hell of a Funk? - damn it, it is but giving one good blow, & all is settled! - but what if I should miss my aim! - ah! it's the fear of that which makes me stink so! - & yet, damnation! what should I be afraid of? if I should not succeed, why nobody can find me out in this Mask, any more than the Man who chop'd the Calf's-head off, a Hundred & Forty Years ago - and so here goes!" Sheridan kneels in profile to the left holding the King by the ear and nose, he looks up at Fox with a sinister scowl, saying, "Hell & Damnation, dont be afraid give a home stroke, & then throw off the Mask - Zounds, I wish I had hold of the Hatchet." Priestley, behind Sheridan, leans towards the King, saying, "Don't be alarmed at your situation, my dear Brother; we must all dye once; and, therefore what does it signify whether we dye today or tomorrow - in fact, a Man ought to be glad of the opportunity of dying, if by that means he can serve his Country, in bringing about a glorious Revolution: - & as to your Soul, or any thing after death don't trouble yourself about that; depend on it, the Idea of a future state, is all an imposition: & as every thing here is vanity & vexation of spirit, you should therefore rejoice at the moment which will render you easy & quiet". He holds a paper: 'Priestley on a Future State'. Sir Cecil Wray stands with his right hand on Sheridan's shoulder, saying, "Here do give me a little room Joseph that I may be in readiness to catch the droppings of the Small Beer when it is tapp'd; I never can bear to see the Small Beer wasted Joseph!" He holds in his left hand a small cask, 'For Small Beer', and a large pipe; in his pocket is a paper: 'Plan of Chelsea Hospital by Sir Ceci[l] Wray'. Abstract:
A cat is hanging from a tree outside St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics in Old Street, London, condemned by a man dressed as a Quaker, with a tartan cloak. The on-lookers call him a 'Merry Andrew' (i.e. a person who amuses others by ridiculous behavior), believing him to be a resident of the building behind (renamed St Andrew's). The Quaker has a number of petitions and bills under his arm. Between 1830 and 1847 the M.P. for Wigtownshire, Sir Andrew Agnew, introduced four bills to the House of Commons attempting to enforce the better Observance of the Sabbath. On his third attempt Charles Dickens wrote 'Sunday Under Three Heads' (1836), a personal attack on Agnew, whom he described as a fanatic, motivated by resentment of the idea that those poorer than himself might have any pleasure in life. Agnew left Parliament in 1837, ending the campaign

"Satire on the negotiations leading to the Peace of Paris in response to Hogarth's "The Times Part 1", but also with visual echoes of his much earlier print, "Southwark Fair". In the centre is a large theatrical booth advertising "The Full and Whole Play of Dido and Aeneas" with a show-cloth on which the lovers are depicted taking shelter in a cave; below is platform on which stand Bute and Princess Augusta accompanied by a zany, a drummer (Arthur Murphy) and a trumpeter (Tobias Smollett). Hogarth, portrayed as an ape, stands on a ladder painting a sign-board with a portrait of Pitt (echoing the sign painter in "Beer Street"); at the foot of the ladder another ape, representing the Duke of Bedford, ambassador to Paris, sits on a small table holding a sheet marked "Prelim Peace". Henry Fox looks out of a window at the top of the booth. On the left, Bute stands on stilts playing the bagpipes with a large bag of money hanging from his neck; he is supported by admiring Scotsmen and adored by a group of bishops. Behind him is an inn with the sign of the thistle advertising "Geud Scrubbing for Mon and Horse"; an ass peers throuh a window and an ass's skull hangs above. Beyond, Scotsmen rejoice as buildings burn, while three fireman sleep beside their engine; an owl representing the French ambassador, the Duke de Nivernois, flies overhead carrying on olive branch (in place of Hogarth's dove with the olive branch) . In the foreground a mastiff urinates on an impression of Hogarth's "The Times Part 1"; Charles Churchill gestures towards a bonfire on which is burning "The Wandsworth Epistle" and "The Briton" (Smollett's newspaper) while a sailor, watched by Britannia, brings a wheelbarrow laden with other journals (echoing the barrow containing "The North Briton" in Hogarth's print). Behind this group, William Beckford draws the attention of Pitt, Temple and Newcastle to the happy Scots; Cumberland, bald-headed, shakes his fist. The British lion grasps a dead French cock in his jaws and looks angrily at a Frenchman who hands coins to a Dutchman leaning on a bale marked "Neutrality" (a similar Dutchman in Hogarth's print sits on a bale smoking contentedly). Behind the lion, George Whitefield, arms outspread and a devil blowing with bellows into his ear, preaches from a three-legged stool to an old woman with a prayer-book and a man with the head of an ass. On the left, three further show-cloths hang on the wall of a house, referring to performances at "Punch Political Poppet Show with a Scotch Uproar": "Then", with the figure of Fame crowning a British commander; "Now", with a Scotsman at the prow of a boat foundering on the rocks of "New Lost Land"; "Alive from France & England" with a clown raising his fist and his foot at a Frenchman (echoing the sign, "Alive from America", in Hogarth's print); at the top of the house a Spaniard and a Frenchman, both grinning, look out of a window."--British Museum online catalogue

"Two-part satire on the resignation of Lord Bute, April 1763. On the left is a scene of execution, headed "Excise", with Bute, identified by his plaid waistcoat, hanging from an apple tree (referring to the Cider Bill), a devil sitting on the branch above him wears a large boot (a pun on Bute) on one leg, the other ending in a claw; two men below exult. In the centre a man (evidently another representation of Bute as he wears a large boot on one leg and on the other leg wears a garter lettered "Honi ..." as in the scene on the right) lies across a fire while another pumps a pair of bellows to fan the flames; three farmers standing behind the fire and another to the right rejoice at Bute's downfall. On the right, another devil reciting the proverb, "Harm watch, Harm catch", one leg ending in a hammer, sits on top of a gallows from which hangs a fox (Henry Fox) wighted down by money bags tied around his neck. On the right is a scene set in a grand interior, headed "Resignation, in which Princess Augusta sprawls weeping in a chair her breasts partly exposed while a devil delves into Bute's breeches as he drags him through a door through which flames and smoke can be seen, the Duke of Cumberland brandishes a sword in his right hand and pushes Bute with his left; he is encouraged by a nephew, Edward, Duke of York, at lower right, a lusty goat, one of whose hands is a claw, looks on with pleasure."--British Museum online catalogue
