Abstract:
A scene before an American fort and palisade, perhaps depicting the indifference of Congress to the sufferings of American soldiers and the pro-slavery attitude of the Americans. A black man lies wounded in the foreground, surrounded by cannon balls. An officer gestures towards him with his hat, turning to a man on the left (possibly meant to represent a Congressman) who is wearing a fur coat, large feathered hat, and is smoking a pipe. To the right of the officer an American soldier points and smiles towards three "Death or Liberty" men, all with grim features and ragged clothes

In Latin., Script: Written by a single scribe in round humanistic script., On f. 1r: the initial F historiated with a view of Rome, full-page illuminated border in gold and colors into which are introduced the Trivulzio arms of Milan (paly of 6, or and vert) and a set of unidentified arms (gules, a cross saltire sable). Initials of books, 8-line, of painted gold on background of blue, green and red, and partial floral border., Initial on f. 2r damaged by crease., and Binding: Eighteenth century. Brown leather, gold-tooled, edges marbled and gilt, rebacked, with T. LIVII DECAS PRIMA on spine.

Manuscript current account, signed, detailing financial transactions between the Massachusetts whaler Joseph Sturges and his Native American employee, Jacob Zakry (or Zachary) over a three-year period ending on March 4, 1719. Items charged to Zachary include payments to a relative and for clothing; 45 shillings a year for "3 whale seasons dyet;" and another charge for "3 years expense at Cape Cod." Items in Zachary's favor include "your share of the oyle of 3/4s of a whale" and "your share of a shark." Account signed by Joseph Sturges
