A scene from Tristram Shandy in which Susannah stands holdings her nose with her right hand while in her left she holds a candle over the cradle where the swaddled infant Tristram lies with a plaster on his nose. She addressed the doctor with obvious fury, her mouth agape. On the left Dr. Slop raises his left fist at her while in his right he holds a cataplasm in a ladle, ready to fling at her. His hat lies at his feet, and his wig is ablaze. Obadiah stands behind him carrying in his hands a chamber pot and a bowl, a medicine bottle tucked under his arm. The two men stand before a screen. The walls of the room are hung with portraits and a mirror; a grandfather's clock showing the time as 6:15 stands against the wall behind the cradle and Susannah. Two medicine bottles sit on a table partially hidden behind the screen. In the foreground lies an over-turned chair

"Dr. Slop, short and fat, seated in an arm-chair (centre) holding in his left hand the book containing the form of excommunication, points with his right at Obadiah who is disappearing (left), one leg and his back alone being visible. A handkerchief hangs over the doctor's cut right thumb. Behind him on the left stands Mr. Shandy, in dressing-gown and night-cap, smoking a long pipe, he is frowning and holds out his left hand in protest at the doctor's curses. Uncle Toby, his crutch under his left arm, stands on the right. pointing with his left hand at a map of Flanders which hangs on the wall over Dr. Slop's head. In the center of a room Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim kneel on a chair and on floor, respectively, focusing their attention on a table to the right on which a rifle is balanced with the help of books, dishes, mops and a chamber pot. The rifle, pointed at a map of Flanders hanging behind them on the wall, is connected to Uncle Toby's chair with a long string. Uncle Toby is pointing to the contraption with a pistol in his left hand; in his right he holds a broom or a duster. Corporal Trim's pistol lies on the floor. A small dog under the table barks at them. Books and maps of fortifications are scattered on the floor in the foreground, among them a large sheet of paper inscribed, "Intergl [sic] siege, 2 quartos, 2 folios, 1 chamberp[ot], 14 rank & file, 1 mop. Trim lost an eye lash." A few brooms are leaning against the wall on extreme left, behind them is a folding screen. Above it hangs a portrait of a man with a 17th-century hairstyle, dressed in armor
