Waterton (right) sits erect and composed astride a Cayman (South American alligator) holdings its forelegs twisted backwards as a bridle. He is barefooted, wearing white shirt and trousers, with a knife in his belt. Four Indians and three black enslaved men haul at the rope attached to the bait which the creature has swallowed.
