Abstract:
2.3 These next two images at the home of Gerald Ice in Wounded Knee depict the preparations for the Hamblecha (Vision Quest). The process begins with the Inipi (sweat lodge) purification ceremonies before the participants go up on the hill where they will sit in pits dug in the ground with nothing but the clothes on their backs, with no food or water. They will smoke the Chanupa (pipe), sing, pray and meditate for four days and nights. At the end, spiritual leader Gerald Ice will gather those who have made the quest and lead them back to camp for another round of Inipi (purification sweat lodges). When this is completed there will be a feast beef soup, fried bread, Wasna, a pemmican comprised of ground buffalo jerky, corn and fat. There will be choke cherry or buffalo berry soup and coffee.
