20 ALS and 2 autograph manuscripts by Chandos Leigh, first Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh. Almost all of the letters were written during his travels on the Continent. Ten were written to his parents and sister in 1818-19 while he was on the grand tour. Letters from Switzerland and the Alps describe the scenery, particularly near Vevey and Lake Como, and refer to the writings of Rousseau, Byron, and Thomas Moore. Letters from Florence and Rome detail his responses to art and architecture, particularly the Venus de Medici, the sculpture of Canova and Thorvaldsen, and "the pride, pomp and circumstance" of Roman Catholic churches and ceremonies, which "must disgust the severe taste of the English traveller." Leigh also mentions Lord Byron, Lady Drury and Lord Beauchamp, the "set of regular English Dandies" and English ladies in Rome, the unattractiveness of Roman women, and his own purchase of a Salvator Rosa painting and Three letters to Sir Egerton Brydges, written during the Leigh family's stay in Switzerland in 1837, concern Leigh's poetry, his health, and a possible visit. His letters to his nephew Frederick Colvile contain news of his health and family; travel descriptions; and advice on Colvile's education. A March 1836 letter announces that the trustees of Rugby School have "unanimously decided in favour of Dr. Arnold;" a December 1837 letter comments that "Dr. Newman's book" (Lectures on Justification?) "contains much that is...to an ordinary man unintelligible." Other topics include the 1850 death of Sir Robert Peel and Leigh's own Liberal Party politics. The collection also contains autograph manuscripts of two poems by Leigh: "The First Days of Spring" and "Hymn for the Consecration of the Church on Westwood Heath."

Chandos Leigh (1791-1850) was educated at Harrow School, where he met Lord Byron, and Christ Church, Oxford, following which he made the grand tour with Philip Shuttleworth. A distant cousin of Jane Austen's, and a generous literary patron to Leigh Hunt and others, Leigh privately published over two dozen collections of his own poems and essays. He was created Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in May, 1839. Leigh traveled several times to the Continent for his heath, but died of apoplexy in Bonn in September of 1850; he was succeeded by his eldest son, William Henry Leigh. and Accompanied by a container list.

Holograph diary tracing 6 months of Cornwall's extended foreign tour in the company of Henry Venn Elliott, his tutor at Trinity College, Cambridge. This volume covers his journey from Pisa through various Italian cities and his subsequent travels to Bari, Corfu and Albania. Cornwall's entries for Pisa, Florence, Rome and Naples are largely detailed description of the artworks, buildings, antiquities and museums he visited daily. He devotes over 30 pages to the Pitti Palace, for example, and lists the books and manuscripts he was able to view at the Riccardi Palace. In Rome, Cornwall also toured the Vatican Library, taking particular note of Henry VIII's letters to Anne Boleyn; attended Roman Catholic services, the profession of a nun, and Carnival; and took a series of guided walks through the city. His visit to Naples included extended tours of Pompei and Herculaneum and of the Naples museum of antiquities, where he observed archaeologists' efforts to unroll and preserve scrolls found at Herculaneum and In Corfu, Cornwall and Elliott met with Sir Thomas Maitland, British governor of the Ionian Islands, and obtained letters of introduction to Ali Pasha and advice on travel in Albania. Cornwall describes the great palace of Ali Pasha at Janina; records two lengthy interviews with Ali Pasha and details his dress and manner; comments on introductions to young men "who belonged to Ali's harem of boys;" and notes his disappointment at failing to see the seraglio. "The cattle-pens (right) of Smithfield Market are filled with cattle with the faces of peers and draped with ermine-trimmed robes. [The ermine is apparent only in the coloured impression] Thurlow, dressed as a farmer, the owner of the cattle, stands on guard with his back to the pens; he wears his Chancellor's wig and uses the mace as a walking-stick. He clutches a full purse in his right hand and looks fiercely at a smaller number of cattle who are being driven from the left towards the pens. One of these, with the head of Lord Derby, stands on his hind legs, saying, "I move an adjournment till after the next Newmarket Meeting". The cattle in the pens (right) have the heads of peers who were believed favourable to Hastings. In the front row are (left to right) Lord Sydney, the Duke of Grafton, and (between two unidentified peers) Lord Bathurst. An ox with the head of Lord Lansdowne, his horns tipped to prevent mischief, stands (right) outside the pen which he tries to enter, his eyes slyly fixed on Thurlow (cf. BMSat 7311). Others cannot be identified. The Opposition peers include the Duke of Portland (who glares fiercely at Sydney), the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Carlisle, and Lord Stormont. They are being driven by a fierce-looking drover (left); a dog wearing a peer's robe, his collar inscribed 'Mountford', barks at them. On the extreme left Hastings, dressed as a butcher but wearing a turban, riding (right to left) a miserable horse fit only for the knacker (the horse of Hanover), carries off a calf with the profile of George III, its forelegs tied together. He whips his horse ferociously. Behind him is a pawnbroker's shop-window, with three balls and the sign 'Money Lent'. In the middle of the cattle-pens (right) is a bell (that of the Market) on a post, a man (? George Rose) wearing a bag-wig pulls the bell-rope, looking round with a cynical smile. Undifferentiated ministerial cattle at the back of the pens push with their horns at a watchman's box which they are overturning. Three men dressed as watchmen, seated on the roof (which they have climbed to escape the cattle), drop staff, lantern, and rattle and are about to fall off; they are Fox, Burke, and Sheridan. The background is formed by buildings; the pawnshop (left) adjoins a large inn behind the cattle, a house at the corner of 'Smithfield' and 'Cow Lane', which diverges on the right. It is the sign of the Crown; in a balcony over the large gateway which leads to the courtyard sit Dundas (left) and Pitt (right), much at their ease, facing each other in profile, regardless of the turmoil below. They are smoking and have foaming tankards marked with a crown; Dundas is in Highland dress, Pitt is dressed as an English farmer or drover. On the balcony is: 'Good Entertainment for Man and Beast'. "Satire on the end of Lord Rockingham's administration shown as a dance at court. The verses below describe the protagonists who have been numbered in pen and ink: in the centre, Princess Augusta (1) dances with Lord Bute (2) their joined hands holding a leading string attached to Pitt (3) with a gouty leg who leans on his crutch, adorned with a coronet, as he converses with America, a half naked native American woman holding a bottle of rum. To the left of the Princess, stand Charles Townshend (4), holding a weathercock, beside his partner Britannia standing on her head, her shield and spear fallen on the ground. Further left, Lord Northington (5) robed as Lord President of the Council holds a glass of wine towards his elaborately dressed young woman (6; identified by Stephens as Betty Careless, although she had died in 1752). Manuscript on paper, in a single secretary hand, corrected, containing the text of a school drama on the life of Oedipus. The text, mainly in fourteener couplets, draws heavily on Alexander Neville's verse translation of Seneca's Oedipus (1581), and also contains extracts from Thomas Newton's Thebais (1581). The original scenes show the influence of other contemporary verse, including Lyly's Euphues and the fifth book of Spenser's Faerie Queene (1596). The work was apparently intended for performance by the pupils of a grammar school, probably the Royal Free Grammar School at Newcastle upon Tyne and The final two leaves of the volume contain "A speach deliverd before the founders at the entrance of the schole," in the same hand. The speech refers to the Selby family (George Selby was elected Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1600).

Manuscript text of twelve letters from Watkins to his father, Pennoyre Watkins, describing his travels in the Low Countries, France, Spain and Switzerland in 1787. The manuscript contains corrections, addenda and several notes for a printer, and is apparently the text of "his Travels in France and Spain....suppressed" in the 1792 publication of Travels through Swisserland, Italy, Sicily..... Versions of Letters 11 and 12 in this manuscript appeared as Letters I and II in the first edition of Travels and Watkins' letters give a full account of places, sights and people encountered on his travels with his friend, George Pocock, and include his horror at the sight of galley slaves in Bordeaux; his dislike of Spanish theater and his "shudder" in the offices of the Inquisition in Barcelona; his admiration of Mont Blanc and Chamonix; and his conclusion that Rousseau's description of the Vallais was "a deception passed upon travellers."
