Portrait showing Susanna Oakes, who ran the circulating library at Ashbourne from about 1795 until 1801, seated in a ladder-back chair with a backdrop of shelved books. She is seated beside an occasional table, her quill pen within reach, in an attitude of contemplative thought. Her left arm is clearly seen to have a muscle wasting disease, and a cane resting against the chair confirms some form of disability

With the title text at the center, a leafy garland envelopes the lower half of the text. Above are two cornucopias with the Freemason's symbol at center.
A decorative border surrounds the bookplate's text. At center is a crest with an open book featuring the phrase Sapientia Legendo. Beneath this are three argent waves. Within the bottom half of the plate is text, which reads "A gift in memory of Harvey Cushing of the Class of 1891 Yale College/ A trustee of the library 1926-1933"

A scene in a fashionable library with ladies and gentlemen conversing with attendants at the counters on either side. On the left a woman looks in a book while her male companion converses with a clergyman, as the woman behind the counter consults a book. On the right, a man sits in a chair as a lady discusses her choices with the man behind the counter who reaches for a book below a sign 'Stamp'. Behind him is another sign "Just published [...]" An older woman with a walking stick approaches the counter on the right, followed by a Black servant and a dog. The windows are filled with books and prints. Through the open door a woman with an umbrella is silhouetted; to the left another sign "History Westminster and its monuments."
