A donkey with a man's head stands in an oval bandbox, in profile to the right. The head is possibly that of Lord Conyngham, wearing a mask inscribed "Incog[nito?]"; a blanket inscribed "G R" is draped over the donkey's back, and a small crown is present on its hindquarters. Upon the creature sits a man, possibly George IV; around the man's torso is a box, torn to show that it contains fur, and inscribed "Lad[y] Cunay[...] [Conynghamham's?] Muff Box". A hand from the right margin holds out a pail of "Virgin[ia] Water" close to the donkey's voracious mouth. The lid of the bandbox in which it stands is inscribed "Harness Box." The box, which is patterned with three-leaf clovers, contains various items including a crown, a sword, a military uniform, and a set of antlers. Behind (right) is a building that is marked "Hamilton Place" on its side

In front of a cottage, a long-haired young apprentice or tradesman in his leather apron smiles proudly as he tries on a red military coat, despite the pleas of his sweetheart who tries to pull him away. A young recruiting sergeant offers the new recruit his own plumed hat to try on, together with a tankard of ale, while in the background a drummer in a grenadier cap looks on and drinks from a glass. A recruiting broadside is tacked on the wall above, addressed to "All aspiring young men who despise slavery..."

"The Mary Elizabeth (Nugent) Marchioness of Buckingham (died 1813) looks from a curtained bed towards her infant which is being shown by an old soldier to her husband, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, who enters from the right, wearing a ribbon and sword. The soldier has a wooden leg and a patch over one eye; he says, "Deel my saul but he'll be a brave soldier your honor, he's got a noble Truncheon". Buckingham answers, "Thanks! thanks! my brave Serjeant, you shall be Knighted this day". Behind him, and on the extreme right, stand another old soldier with two wooden legs supported on crutches, and a man in a university gown and bands, carrying a jug inscribed 'Dublin University Pitcher'. The soldier says, "Downright robbery, by St Patrick! we'll be soon famished if our broth is to be stole from us in this manner". He looks towards a man in a Chancellor's wig and gown, seated on the extreme left and holding a bowl, who says to a nurse who stands over him : "Poo!
