Abstract:
"An elderly old-fashioned doctor, holding his gold-headed cane, sits bending forward to inspect the tongue of his agonized patient. The latter, grotesquely obese, sits in a low arm-chair (right) with his lean and hideous wife beside him; a thin grotesque footman, his hair standing on end, stands behind the doctor's chair, leaning towards his master. All three put out their tongues, and all register dismay; the equally ugly doctor gapes in unhelpful concern. The grotesque heads are closely grouped against a high window. A grandfather clock (left) shows that the time is 2.22. A thermometer hangs on the wall."--British Museum online catalogue, description of an earlier state

"An elderly, sharp-featured virago, with skinny neck and muscular arms, sits directed to the right, furiously kicking and shaking her left fist at the old-fashioned looking-glass which stands on a muslin-covered dressing-table. The glass has been shattered by the curling-tongs which she holds in her right hand, and a broken hand-mirror lies on the floor. She wears old-fashioned stays laced over a petticoat, but her head-dress is complete; two tall feathers, with flowers and striped ribbon drapery, poised on unconvincing curls. On the dressing-table are fragments of mirror, large comb, tiny hair-brush, &c., bottles labelled 'Milk of Roses' and 'Olimpian Dew'. A bottle of 'Circassian Bloom' lies on the floor. The tall window is partly covered by a curtain hanging in festoons from above. Behind the chair is a shallow wooden tub."--British Museum online catalogue

"A stout, ugly, and elderly woman holds in her left hand a barber's block, with a carved head in profile, on which is an elaborate pyramidal wig with ringlets. This she is covering with powder or flour from a dredger. Her hair is short and scanty; on her head is a very large black patch, two smaller ones are on her temple. She is dressed in undergarments, showing stays, and frilled petticoat over which is worn a pocket. Her dress, the bodice of which is almost cylindrical from its stiffening whalebone, is on a stool behind her. Her back is turned to the casement window (right) through which look two grinning old women, wearing frilled muslin caps. Over the window, and over the wall on its left, is a heavily festooned curtain. Sacarissa stands facing a low rectangular table (left), on which are a bottle and wine-glass, a candle (?) in a triangular shade, which is falling over, having apparently been knocked by the wig, patches, a comb, a paper, &c. Behind on the wall, in deep shadow, is a picture of a dome inscribed "The Pantheon"."--British Museum online catalogue
