Nell Reeves describes the 1851 trip from Illinois to Oregon of the wagon train commanded by Captain John A. Powell. She uses extracts from accounts by Jane Powell, daughter-in-law of Captain Powell, and S. Hamilton, a member of the train. Both narratives were taken from "The Powell History," privately printed in 1922.

Sarah Davis's diary records her 1850 trip across the plains with her husband. Entries describe the scenery and trail conditions. Several pages of notes by her husband at the front of the diary indicate he had traveled to California once before in 1849. The journal is accompanied by three photographs of Sarah Davis.

He adds the distances to Sacramento, from "the most approved authors;" distances from Burlington, Iowa to Kanesville; a "List of places where the face of the country & soil & denotes the existence of gold;" notes on Indians; and notes "To Emigrants." The text is accompanied by pen and ink maps of the route. Photocopy (in folder 2) scanned.
