"Three fashionable dandies (see No. 13029) in a well-furnished room. One (left) sings, seated, and with a leg resting on a second (lyre-backed) chair; he leans sentimentally, hand on heart, towards a lutenist reclining on a (Regency) sofa playing an ornate curiously shaped instrument. The third stands behind the sofa, playing a flageolet, and admiring himself in a mirror above the ornate fireplace. The vocalist holds an open music-book: 'Love has eyes.' On the floor beside him are two others: 'The Lovesick Swain set to Music' and 'Our Warbling Notes and Ivory lutes Shall ravish every ear.' Two whole length portraits flank the mirror, one of a lady in quasi-Elizabethan dress, the other of a man similarly dressed, both having pinched waists and full busts. Below one is a picture of 'Vacuna' [Goddess of rural leisure], a blowzy woman lying under a tree; below the other, a grotesque 'Narcissus' admires his reflection. "A domestic interior. A fat and ugly citizen, wearing old-fashioned dress with a small unpowdered wig, stands on the hearth-rug (right), his back to the fire; he is meditatively reading the 'Gazette', headed: 'New Taxes', and 'Bankru[pts]', his left hand plunged in his breeches pocket. Behind him on the chimney-piece is a pair of scales for weighing guineas (see BMSat 5128). His wife, bald-headed, ugly, and stout, leans back in an arm-chair, her hands raised in protest at an unpowdered wig which a grotesquely thin and ragged French hairdresser (left) proffers obsequiously. A fashionably dressed young man with cropped hair looks with imbecile surprise at his reflection in an oval mirror over the chimney-piece. His mouth is half-covered by his swathed neckcloth, he wears a short spencer (see BMSat 8192) over a sparrow-tail coat, and half-boots. A young woman with over-dressed but unpowdered (red) hair looks with dismay at her reflection in a mirror which she has snatched from the wall. "A satire on the folly of marriage where the two parties are of a dissimilar age, and on the sexual opportunism of young military office. An elderly magistrate has fallen asleep sitting beside a table on which are glasses, pipes and two bottles, one labelled “Port” in front of an empty grate. He holds a copy of “Compleat JUSTICE”, showing him to be a Justice of the Peace, and a paper protrudes from his pocket lettered “-him for a Trepass on...”. On a bracket table behind him are “BURNS JUSTICE”, a paper lettered “Stealing a Hare” and another “Mid to Wit...”. On the wall over his head is a stag’s head with antlers alluding to his cuckoldry. On the other side of the fireplace, watching him, his pretty young wife sits beside an army officer who caresses her. The officer’s hat hangs on the wall behind them.
