A scene in London, possibly near St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, shows a musician at an open window holding his ears against the noise of the street; a pregnant ballad-seller chants while her baby cries and a parrot above her head on the lamp post squawks; a milkmaid and other street-traders cry their wares; one small boy plays a drum while another urinates under the startled gaze of a small girl who holds a rattle and stands by a house made of toy blocks; an itinerant oboist plays; a dustman carries his basket and a bell; a knife-grinder sharpens a cleaver, a dog barking at his feet; on the roof at the right two cats fight (both shown with arched backs) just beyond the chimney from which a chimney sweep emerges. A courtesan sits in a small armchair beside a small round tea-table, holding a cup in an affected manner. Behind her, on the chair, is a cat. A negro foot-boy in livery stands behind the table holding the tap of an urn which is filling the tea-pot. Both look towards the spectator with heads tilted to the left. A picture, freely sketched but apparently pornographic, hangs on the wall. From the ceiling hangs a cage containing a parrot. On the floor is an elegant rug with a scrolled design. The plate on the right shows, a young Arawak woman, shown full-length and wearing a beaded apron and standing with her right foot posed on a small rock. She holds a parrot held high in her right hand and a bow and arrow in her left; in the distance another Arawak is shown ready to shoot his arrow and The plate on the left shows, a Arawak native slitting the throat of a large Aboma snake that is hanging from a branch of a tree, suspended by a rope around its neck. Two other Arawak natives pull at the rope to hoist the snake higher. A man in Western dress, his back to the viewer, directs the work of the natives from the ground (left foreground), his rifle resting against the trunk of the tree. Stedman was a friend of William Blake who may have assisted Stedman, an amateur artist., "Indian female of the Arrowauka Nation" first engraved by Benedetti and published "Decr. 1st, 1792, by J. Johnson"., and Copies of plates origingally printed for: Stedman, J. G. Narrative, of a five years' expedition, against the revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the wild coast of South America.
