The play is divided into at least four acts (leaves are missing at the end) and balances two plots; one concerns the tailor Littlewit who joins the Parliamentary army and his shrewish wife, and the other follows the military and political maneuverings of the upper class. Historical characters include John Pym, Denzil Holles, Sir William Strode, Arthur Heselrige, and John Hampden of the House of Commons, Prince Rupert, Lord George Digby, Robert Bertie Earl of Lindsey, Robert Devereux Earl of Essex, Lord Philip Wharton, Hugh Peters ("from New England"), Isaac Penington Lord Mayor of London, and King Charles I.
