"A cobbler, broadly grinning, holds up a long thread and recounts a long tongue-twister beginning, 'When a twister a twisting, will twist him a twist', to the diversion of two sailors, who remark, 'Scuttle my hammock, Jib, if this here fellow does not beat our parson.', 'I think so messmate and the surgeon into the bargain.'; a sign above the cobbler's shop reads, 'Men and womens soles translated, their understand-ings mended - uprights rectified - and quarters restiched. by J Cook - Knt. of St. Crispin, and secular twister to the parish of Sheeperton'; a gloomy parson looks out from a cottage window opposite, underneath a sign reading, 'Abraham Amen parish clerk and sexton', the notice in the house next door reads, 'Iohn Heavan. Inside a humble house, a man and woman standing together at right, the woman with hand on hip and leaning against the man, both looking towards a cleric at left who turns away with a rod in his hand, a tankard resting on a table before him, the door opens onto a street behind. In the center of the room is a cobbler's bench with some tools of the trade. Against the back wall is a large cabinet with substantial pillars and with plates lined against the back. "A group of men standing outside an inn with the sign of the 'Bugle horn'. One, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, holds in his left hand a paper inscribed 'Courier / Dispatch [?]... / Stocks'. His right forefinger is extended as if laying down the law to his companions. On his right stands a man holding his chin with an expression of deep thought. Next to him (left) is an artisan, listening intently, his breeches unfastened at the knee, his stockings ungartered; he holds a short hammer and is probably a shoemaker. Behind (right) a man wearing a waistcoat over a ruffled shirt, but no coat, lounges against the stump of a tree and listens open-mouthed.
