"The interior of a large church or cathedral. Burke, dressed as a Jesuit, standing within a low, semicircular wall at the foot of a crucifix, marries the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Fitzherbert. The Prince is about to put the ring on her finger. Fox gives her away, holding her left wrist. Beside him (right) stands Weltje in back view but looking to the left at the ceremony. A napkin is under his left arm, bottles project from his coat-pockets, and the tags on his shoulder denote the liveried manservant. To the left of Fox appears the profile of George Hanger. On the left North sits, leaning against the altar wall, sound asleep, his legs outstretched. He wears his ribbon but is dressed as a coachman, his hat and whip beside him. All the men wear top-boots to suggest a runaway match. Behind the Prince in a choir seat is a row of kneeling monks who are chanting the marriage service. The crucifix is partly covered by a curtain, but the legs and feet are painfully distorted ... On the wall and pillars of the church are four framed pictures: 'David watching Bathsheba bathing', 'St. Anthony tempted by monsters', 'Eve tempting Adam with the apple', and 'Judas kissing Christ', the last being over the head of Fox."--British Museum online catalogue

An old apple-woman sits asleep beside a table on which fruit (apples and strawberries) is arranged, with baskets under the table. A dog sleeps beside her. A little boy (left) pushes a shaft of wheat up her nose as a little girl behind him eggs him on. The children are dressed up, as if for Sunday, and the scene is in the fields near London, St. Paul's on the horizon. Behind the woman (right) is a closed box, resembling a sentry-box, on which are placards including an enlistment notice: 'All able bodied men willing to serve five guineas."

"A cow representing the commerce of Great Britain stands passively on the sea-shore while an American with a feathered cap saws off her horns; one horn lies on the ground. A Dutchman milks the cow ... France, a foppishly-dressed Frenchman, and Spain, a don in slashed doublet and cloak, hold bowls of milk. In the foreground lies the British lion asleep, unconscious of a pug-dog which stands on his back befouling him. Behind the lion stands a plainly-dressed Englishman clasping his hands in despair. In the background across the sea is a town inscribed Philadelphia; in front of it on the shore, two men on a minute scale (General and Admiral Howe) are seated at a table. Both are asleep, a punch-bowl is on the table... Beside them, laid up on dry land is a man-of-war inscribed Eagle (Howe's flag-ship.)" -- George
