"Soldiers march impassively in double file through a crowded street, and over the prostrate bodies of those whom they have overthrown. Military arrogance and foppishness are personified by the officer, much caricatured, with a grotesquely elongated waist (cf. British Museum Satires No. 7352). He places one toe on the body of a fish-woman who lies on her back, her legs much exposed. His outstretched right leg is poised above a crouching woman who tries to protect her barrow of vegetables. Two men holding muskets precede the officer; one tramples on the face of an infant. The officer is followed by a man carrying a pike, behind whom march six soldiers in double file carrying muskets with fixed bayonets. All march ruthlessly, eyes front, regardless of the havoc they are causing. A porter lies on the ground clutching a broken wooden case faintly inscribed 'Mr . . . Silversmith'; from it pour plate and jewels. The porter's knee is badly damaged, and his knot has been knocked from his shoulders. A milliner or courtesan lies on her back clutching the hair of a barber who clasps her leg. On the extreme right a prostrate woman tries to protect her infant, and a newsboy with his horn and a sheaf of the 'Morning Herald' tries to escape from the trampling soldiers. Other victims between the soldiers and the wall are a woman with a crutch, a shoeblack, a man with a tray of rolls. A pair of beseeching hands and two female legs (right) waving in the air add to the turmoil, which is accentuated by the writhing forms of the fish which fall from the fishwoman's basket. The background is formed by the wall of a stone building with two elaborately barred niches, and by the window of a silversmith's shop (right)."--British Museum online catalogue

"On the pavement outside a pawnshop are a man selling pamphlets and a woman with household goods tied up in two handkerchiefs. The man is a ragged shambling scarecrow, tall and thin, with a battered top-hat, shock of hair, and huge whiskers (signs of dandyism). On his tall pole is a placard 'NO POPERY', the latter word bisected by the pole. He squints downwards, saying, 'a full account of the Interest taken by the whole House'. The woman, stout and proletarian, wearing a red cloak and an apron, looks up at the placard, saying, 'No Pop--ery eh? I suppose since Old Grindall's Sons got into the Parliament, they are asham'd of their Trade--well there is plenty of other pop-ery's about--& as to Interest they always took enough of that you ugly Scarecrow.' On the closed shop-door (left) are the three balls sign and Pawnbrokers '[M]oney Lent'. In the window hang watches, &c. "Scene outside a large apothecary's shop, both windows filled with large coloured jars. Above the door is the sign, a terrestrial globe on which scales are balanced. Outside, a doctor in old-fashioned dress, acts as usher with a long wand to a band of naked infants (left) who run eagerly towards him. In the jars fœtuses are indicated. Outside the other window stands an undertaker holding up his professional staff and doffing a hat draped with a mourning scarf towards a skeleton who advances from the background (right). A satire on 18th-century English hairdressing and women’s fashion: a view of a London shop, presumably "The Rose" (note the large rose above the doorway), a hairdressing and wig-making shop owned by William Vickery (active circa 1783-1832). The shop is shown with double bay windows on the ground floor in which are displayed enormous wigs decorated with feathers. Men and women lean out of the windows on the upper level to watch a pair of bears escaping from the front door. The bears -- one saying to the other "Run brother Run, if were caught were Kill’d as sure as a Gun" -- are pursued by the proprietor of the shop and another woman. The shopfront is covered with advertisements for the real services and products offered by Vickery including Bears Grease, Soft Pomatums, Sticking Plaister, Curling Irons as well as "La Tete Transparante" and "Figaro Braids".
