"Print of the interior of a restaurant or tavern. Diners are seated at long tables eating and drinking. In the background are cubicles separated by drapes with the diner's hats hanging up along the top of the beams. A clock on the wall marks the time as half past eight. A tall, stooping man ... serves a table of diners on the right as a young woman carries two tankards of ale to a table. The image is a copy of Hogarth's Midnight modern Conversation: A scene in a paneled room (in a public house?) with eleven men seated around a table in the center of which is a large punch-bowl decorated with Chinese figures. Wine bottles litter the floor and piled high on the mantelpiece. In the right corner a chamber pot overflows. One man in the foreground has fallen backwards off his chair; as he lands prostrate on the floor, one of his intoxicated companions staggers toward him, oblivious to the fact that his wine is spilling out over the prostrate man's head. "Pitt as hangman stands beside a fire of faggots immediately outside the door of the 'Crown & Anchor' (name on door-post). In his right hand is an axe; he drops an open book into the flames, and looks over his shoulder at Reeves who is disappearing into the tavern. On one page (right) is the trunk of a tree surmounted by a crown and the words 'The Royal Stump', on the other: 'No Lords No Commons No Parliame[nt] Damn the Revolution'. He wears a long coat with a hangman's noose tied round his waist, a round hat, and wrinkled gaiters. From his pocket protrudes a book: 'Ministerial Sincerity and Attachment a Novel'. He says:"Know, villains, when such paltry slaves presume To mix in Treason, if the plot succeeds, You're thrown neglected by: - but if it fails, You're sure to die like dogs!" Reeves, with hands outstretched in protest, says: "O Jenky! Jenky! have I gone through thick & thin for this ?" From his coat-pockets hang papers: '£400 pr Ann, To the Chairm[an] of the Crown & Anchor', and, 'List of Spies Informers Reporters Crown & Anchor Agents'. On the right Fox, Sheridan, and Erskine blow at the fire; the two former on hands and knees, Erskine, in wig and gown, between them, an arm across the shoulders of each. Abstract:
Two ballad singers, one of them standing on top of an overturned large basket, are singing to a small but pleased-looking crowd by the entrance to an inn. A child standing in front of the basket is reaching up to offer the singer a coin
"Roads diverge in three directions from a posting-inn. A signpost (left) points left. 'To London'; another (right) points 'to Rochester' and 'To Aylesbury', these roads converging in an acute angle. In the centre foreground is a round well-head. A post-chaise on the extreme left gallops off to London; three passengers wearing election favours in their hats exclaim respectively: "Dead or alive we'll have him I'll Barber him"; "Provided nevertheless, if he does not we will have his son"; "I'll Butcher him if he wont come Dam him." A horseman, who has lost his stirrups, gallops after the coach, saying, "Dam Mr G-----s & Mr R------ns too I'll see if the Eloquence of a Bishop will not bring him." A man sprawling on the ground by the inn shouts towards the horseman, saying, "Stop him hes stole the Horse". A man lounges at the door of the inn holding the reins of several saddle-horses. The inn is inscribed 'Beef Steak House'; over the door is 'John Dickins'; an election flag inscribed 'Gregory' flies from a first-floor window. On the Rochester road in the foreground a post-chaise proceeds slowly with shuttered windows, but flying two flags. Words come from two invisible occupants: "Tho Smith's the best friend I have I'll oppose him Bob for fun's sake" and "This will Kill me Quite Matt". Two horsemen follow, saying, "I'll be ashamed to go into Town Tho its allmost Dark" and "I'll say I have been to Gravesend on business." In front of the chaise a horseman with a flag gallops, saying, "As I am the Manager I must haste to the Hall & nominate him tho' I know he wont come." In the distance two riders proceed on the Aylesbury road, saying, "I'll go this way that they may not laugh at me", and "friend so will I". A man lounging by the inn says "I should like to go to supper but I suppose they that go must pay". On each post-chaise is the letter 'A'."--British Museum online catalogue
