"A little boy (looking more like a girl) in a frock and cross-gartered shoes, with short, untidy hair, stands agressively, one foot raised to kick, fists clenched. At his feet are a battledore and shuttlecock and a doll; above his head hangs a canary in a cage. He shouts: I dont like Dolls!-I dont like Canary Birds-I hate Battledore and Shuttlecock, I like Drums, and Trumpets-I wont go to school-I will stay at home-I will have my own way in every thing!! The mother, an ugly middle-aged woman (right), in an old-fashioned dress, with a cap and apron, stoops towards him, saying, Bless the Baby-what an aspiring spirit-if he goes on in this way-he will be a second Buonaparte! "Brougham, in wig and gown, stands in Old Square, Lincolns Inn, the roof of the Hall, which forms a background, being so inscribed; houses are on the right. He carries on his head, which is in profile to the right, a tray, inscribed London College; this supports a neo-Gothic building with pinnacles and a clock-tower; tiny trees and figures in academic dress round the building show the scale. From its four corners rise labels inscribed in large letters, Etymology, Orthography, Prosody, Syntax. He says Who'I buy? very cheap, very free. From one shoulder hangs a brief-bag inscribed Subscriptions; from the other a ribbon supporting a handsomely bound book: List of Share Holders. Round his waist is a hoop which also encircles the waists of five little puppets: a man in archaic court-dress, holding a feathered hat, next a stout lady holding a fan and a large purse (? the Duke of St. Albans (as Falconer) and Mrs. Coutts, cf. British Museum Satires No. 14875), a fashionably dressed man in top-hat and furred and frogged coat, and Lord Eldon holding the mace and the Purse of the Great Seal. Abstract:
"From the first page of the second part of 'The Theatres', see British Museum Satires No. 5063, which is an attack on Colman and Covent Garden. Colman sits on the lap of Mother Shipton, in his right hand is a harlequin's sword, in his left, a paper inscribed "For wooden Sword I've chang'd my useless Pen I ne'er could Write & Hate all writing Men". A ribbon sash with long ends is round his waist from which hangs a child's coral and bells. At his feet lies a bundle of pens. He looks towards Harlequin (left) who is trampling on three books inscribed "Shak ...", "Johns ..." [Jonson], and "Shake..." "Mother Shipton", in conical hat and ruff, has a walking-stick in her left hand, her right. is over Colman's shoulder; she says: "Oh my Coly my Coly oh my Coly my Deary". Across the engraving is printed, "Bad has begun and worse remains behind". On the back is part of the poem: "See curious Colman negligent of merit, Of Tragic energy and comic spirit Palm on his servile partners, and the town, Abject and vile dependents of his own"."--British Museum online catalogue
