Abstract: The quadrangle at Tattersalls (1823) is filled with groups of betting men, 'the greater part ... are portraits' (p. xx). The three men on the extreme left are Mr. Tanfield, Lord Sefton, and Colonel Hylton Jolliffe. In the extreme right corner is Sir L. Skeffington; near him, but not identifiable, is John Gully the ex-pugilist. A Jew sells wares from a basket-tray. Over the doorway: Houses must not be taken away without being paid for
