Original panelled calf; it was quite probably a copy kept in the house in town and bequeathed to Lady Waldegrave. Mr. Harris Prior of Geneva, N.Y., also owns a copy of the edition of 1695, in which Horace Walpole's bookplate has been inserted.
Laid in is the lining paper of a copy of this edition in which Horace Walpole's bookplate had been inserted, owned by Harris Prior. No press mark was found. With four architectural sketches in pencil on front flyleaf. - Provenance
- Horace Walpole's copy with his autograph and some notes; not sold in 1842. Armorial bookplates of John Hopton Russell Hopton Chichester, and of Lord Carlingford. Later owned by Lord Strachie. The Strawberry Hill Sale copy of the first edition 1695; quarto, does not appear in Manuscript Catalogue of 1763 or in the Strawberry Hill Sale; but it is now at The Lewis Walpole Library, and has Horace Walpole's signature and a few notes. It has the bookplate of Lord Carlingford, who married Frances, Countess Waldegrave and was sold by Lord Strachie, whose mother was Lady Waldegrave's niece, to W.S. Lewis in 1943. An earlier bookplate is that of John Hopton Russell Chichester, a barrister of Lincolns Inn. W.S. Lewis was sent it to look at. He had bookplate removed. No sign of a pressmark. He did not buy it. Offered to The Lewis Walpole Library in 1983, by R.W. Smith, bookseller in New Haven, $450.00 - not taken. Lord Strachie; 1943.
