BEIN Osborn pc313: Imperfect: numbers IV and 26 wanting; no. 25 mutilated; many leaves bled at top or fore-edge. Staves and melodies are added in ms. to songs of praise and some symbols are added in ms. to the instructions. Ownership inscription: R. Richardson, a present from a friend 1888. Twelve blank leaves bound in at end have watermark "1810."
Printed book, probably printed late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, with words of 36 metrical songs of praise, some of them psalms, with space for addition of musical staves and melodies in ms. Interspersed with the hymns and psalms are brief instructions on rudiments of music explaining clefs, lengths of notes, sharps and flats, scales, etc. Some of the text of the section "Introduction to the grounds of music" matches text in The spiritual man's companion, or, The pious Christian's recreation, 1753. Some of the instructions have spaces for musical symbols or notes to be added in ms. Also includes: Scholars names, belonging to Normanby Church ; Subscriber's [sic] names for singing [headed by The Rev'd. C. Dowker] ; Subscribers names for the bass viol ; Rules for the good of this institution.
