Joseph Heger's pencil sketches were made during an 1858 army march from Camp Scott, Fort Bridger, to Salt Lake City and from Camp Floyd to Fort Union. The drawings depict towns, camps, and scenes from Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico

Joseph Heger, born in Hesse, immigrated to America as a child. He enlisted in the army in 1855 and served as a private in Co. K. of the 1st Regiment of Mounted Riflemen under Lt. Dubois on the Utah Expedition in 1858 and on the Arizona-New Mexico campaign of 1859-60.
