Abstract: Syrinx, naked apart from a loosely draped sheet, hides among the reeds in the foreground on the left; she holds a clump of reeds in front of her face, concealing it. Pan, behind her on the right, lunges forward through the reeds in pursuit

Plate was likely engraved by Lens in addition to being published by him; according to the British Museum online catalogue, plates that carry only his 'excudit' seem also to have been made by him. See entry for 'Bernard Lens II'.

Provenance: Formerly owned by Thomas Kirgate, with his manuscript notes in the volumes; probably sold by King and Lochée, 4 December 1810 (Kirgate Sale), lot 386, to Denley. Later owned by Robert Hartshorne of Highlands, NJ, with his bookplate in the first volume of the set. Parke-Bernet (Hartshorne sale, Lot 393) to Brick Row for W.S. Lewis; 30 October 1945.
