The journal begins with the brothers taking leave of the family and describes their journey by coach, railroad, and streamer from Griffith, Georgia to New Orleans. He describes New Orleans, Havana, the journey by foot across Panama, and records his thoughts on the Cuban and Panamian societies. The journal continues to chronicle the trip by sea voyage to San Francisco with stops in Acapulco. The account ends with a description of San Francisco, its people, and Simmons's trip inland as far as the Sacramento Valley.

- John C. Simmons, a Methodist minister, and his brother (also a minister) were appointed by the Georgia Conference to churches in Marysville and Grass Valley, California. They sailed from New Orleans to San Francisco by way of Panama in 1851.
