In Latin., Watermark: letter P, similar to Briquet 8658 (1471-1480)?., Script: Copied by two hands in bold Gothica Semitextualis Libraria with Southern features and under Humanistic influence, visible in the majuscules; hand A copied ff. 1r-51v; hand B, marked by the use of an a closer to Textualis and a preference for straight s in final position, copied ff. 52r-59r., Several lower margins of parchment leaves have been repaired before writing by means of a strip of parchment pasted on the defective edges. A long tear in the parchment of f. 56 has been sewn before writing., Paragraph marks alternately in red and blue (in artt. 3-4 only). Headings in red (in artt. 1-2 only, with sometimes instructions in small script in the margins). Gothic 2-line plain initials alternately in red and blue, with guide letters (mostly in red ink) written in the outer margin close to the outer edge of the leaves. 3-line littera duplex with delicate blue and red penwork extending into the margin f. 41v (text art. 2); 4-line littera duplex with the same decoration ff. 40v (prologue art. 2) and 52r (art. 5); 6-line littera duplex with the same decorationf. 1r (art. 1)., and Binding: ca. 1500. Repaired blind-tooled brown leather over bevelled wooden boards; sewn on three leather thongs; the original covers are pasted over the light brown new leather, itself blind-tooled with fillets and a roll; the original covers decorated with fillets, vertical rows of rolls, and at the top and bottom one horizontal row of the same. Remnants of two clasps attached to the rear cover, with two brass catches on the front cover, fixed with three nails and engraved with the inscription “nom” (?) in Northern Gothica Textualis Formata. In Latin., Script: Written in a well formed round gothic bookhand by a single scribe., Initials, 5-line, at beginning of text: red with delicate black penwork designs. Heading and each verbum in red; synonyms connected by a curving red line., and Binding: Nineteenth century, Italy. Original sewing on three slit straps. Quarter bound in white sheepskin. The beech boards are early, 15th century, with title written twice on front and once on back. A leaf-shaped catch on the lower board, the upper one cut in for a clasp strap. Spine covering and clasp strap are recent additions.

In Italian., Script: copied by one hand in a peculiar form of Southern Gothica Textualis Libraria under Humanistic influence as visible in the total lack of compression; special features are: the sloping hairline at the top of the second stroke of e, parallelled by the sloping stroke on i; h with exceptionally long curved extension under the baseline; the forked lower ending of f and straight s on or under the baseline and the forked descender of p; and the very fancy majuscules., Headings in pale red, often difficult to read. Yellow heightening of the majuscules. Initials, with guide letters written in the space reserved for the initial: (1) flourished initials (3-4 lines) in red with pale red (or brown) penwork or in blue with red penwork, sometimes with marginal penwork extensions; (2) at the beginning of each text a larger initial; the letters following this type of initial are majuscules. F. 3r: 12-line blue initial of the littera duplex type with extensive penwork in red and some blue, with decorative border in the same colours in the inner and lower margin and tendrils in the other margins containing flowers and acorns; the border of the lower margin terminates in a medallion containing a coat of arms; ff. 8r, 41r: 9-line initial of the same type and in the same colours; f. 47v: 6-line, idem; f. 77v: 7-line black initial. The lower margin of f. 62 torn off., The manuscript contains: 1) Ownership inscription and note on the scribe, followed by a variant form of a Biblical quotation (Lamentations 3:27-28). 2) Legend of St. Jerome in Italian, with special attention for miraculous events, as an introduction to artt. 4-6. On the boards marks of one clasp attached to the front board and on the front board the ca. 1800 inscription "JO." written in black ink. Possibly the binding once belonged to another manuscript.

Description:
In Latin., Script: Copied by one hand in Humanistica Textualis Libraria., Art. 1 opens with a 4-line Gothic flourished initial in blue with red penwork extending in the inner margin; art. 2 opens with a 4-line Gothic plain initial in red., and Binding: Twentieth century (?). Half binding was removed and the codex restored and rebound in 2000 by the Northeast Document Conservation Center. The new binding is grey cloth over heavy pasteboard. On the spine a new black leather title label with gold-tooled inscription "SANCTI JERONIMI EPISTOLAE MS 788". Among the flyleaves, the two following f. 50 are earlier than the others, which are yellowish machine-made paper belonging to the discarded binding. A modern hand wrote on the last front flyleaf r the title "Sancti Ieronimi epistolae ad Salvinam et Ageruchiam".
