"The couple torment each other in the breakfast-room. A round table is drawn close to a blazing fire. The lady has left her seat to thump on the piano (left), singing loudly, with her back to her husband, but turning her eyes towards him. He sits in the corner of a sofa, crouching away from her, his hand over his ear, food stuffed into his mouth, reading the 'Sporting Calendar'. The pages of her open music-book are headed 'Forte'. Her song is: 'Torture Fiery Rage \ Despair I cannot can not bear'. On the piano lies music: 'Separation a Finale for Two Voices with Accompaniment'; on the floor is 'The Wedding Ring - a Dirge'. She wears a becoming morning gown with cap, but has lost the slim grace of British Museum Satires No. 10472, and her soft features have coarsened. Behind the piano a boisterous coarse-featured nurse hastens into the room holding a squalling infant, and flourishing a (watchman's) rattle. On the lady's chair is an open book, 'The Art of Tormenting', illustrated by a cat playing with a mouse. Her sunshade hangs from the back of the chair. On the breakfast-table are a large hissing urn, a tea-pot, a coffee-pot, &c., a bottle of 'Hollands' (beside the woman's place), and a (full) dish of muffins. The man's coffee-cup is full and steaming. He wears a dressing-gown with ungartered stockings and slippers. An air of dejection and ill-nature replaces his former good-humoured sprightliness. Under his feet lies a dog, 'Benedick', barking fiercely at an angry cat, poised on the back of the sofa. A square birdcage high on the wall is supported by branching antlers. In it two cockatoos screech angrily at each other, neglecting a nest of three young ones. Beside it (left) is a bust of 'Hymen' with a broken nose, and (right) a thermometer which has sunk almost to 'Freezing'. On the chimney-piece is a carved ornament: Cupid asleep under a weeping willow, his torch reversed, the arrows falling from his quiver. "John Bull, an ungainly yokel, short and stout, stands between Melville (left) and Pitt (right). Melville, wearing Highland dress, sits full face, vomiting a shower of guineas (as in British Museum Satires Nos. 10392, 10400) into a tub. Pitt, rather behind and in profile to the right, rests his elbow on a table and supports his head; a similar tub is before him on the ground. On the table are two large books, 'Debates' and 'Interest Tables'. In the foreground lies a large tankard inscribed 'Whtbr[ead]'. John holds a decanter of 'Conscience Emetic'; he grins, saying, "It do work em rarely to be zure it be better zo than having a continual load on the Stomach tho!" "A grotesquely dilapidated post-chaise stands outside a ramshackle inn (r.); the driver lashes the horses cruelly, a boy lifts a pitch-fork to strike, but the wretched animals refuse to move. A barefooted slattern approaches from the r. with a huge red-hot poker. From the post-chaise leans its occupant, who wears a ribbon and star, and a night-cap. His feet have broken through the ruinous chaise; he threatens the driver with his cane; the latter's words are etched after the title: '"------"Forward immediately your Honour; But sure a'nt I waiting for the Girl with the Poker \ "just to give this Mare a burn your Honour, 'tis just to make her start your Honour.' The chaise is roofed with thatch on which a cock is pecking; it is held together by rope, the reins and traces are of rope. The wheels are broken. Above the door of the primitive inn is a placard: 'The New Thatched-House Tavern' [the Thatched House was a fashionable London tavern and club]. On the signboard an eagle attacking a naked infant (Ganymede) is depicted; above is a board: 'Nate Post-Chaise and Whiskey \ Nate \ Entertainment for Man & Beast.' From a brick chimney a little sweep looks out waving his brush. On a bench by the door a man with a crutch and wooden leg sits smoking and drinking, not interested in the departing grandee. In the foreground a lean sow eats from a heap of potatoes; a young pig attempts to suck; another, almost a skeleton, tries to eat potatoes. "A very clumsy post-chaise descends a mountain road across a bare moor. On approaching a hair-pin bend the fore-heels have broken off, the chaise is about to upset, the occupant falls through the front window. A Highlander lies prone on the roof, saying to the unfortunate traveller: '" - Hald your Haund Mun, hold your haund! - en troth mun! e'n gin you na mind \ "yoursel, youl just make the Muckle Laird coupeing his Creels! - ' The chaise was drawn by a horse and ass; on the latter, which kicks violently, sits a primitive postilion; the traces are of rope. A shepherd (the muckle laird) reclines in the elbow of the road in the foreground; his dog barks at the chaise, which is followed by a man on a donkey. Horned sheep with tattered fleeces and bare rumps are beside the shepherd (r.). "Three tax-collectors beset a house door, on which is a plate: 'Doctor Humbug', and above: 'Advice Gratis.' An elderly man holds the knocker, a ring in a lion's mouth, and looks up at the window above where two heads peer out: a grotesque aged couple wearing nightcaps. On the lintel stands a pestle and mortar, inscribed 'Hippocrates.' On the house are two bills: 'The Goodwill of this House to be disposed of for Particulars enquire' - and 'The Budget opened or how to raise the Wind for the Year 1805.' The tax-collector holds a large open book: 'Window Tax Income Property House Tax'; under his arm is another book;..'Tax-Servants-Horses.' Papers inscribed 'Tax' and 'Taxes' project from his coat-pocket. Beside him, a man holding a paper points his pen viciously at the open window. A third man stands close behind holding a large book inscribed 'Dog Tax.' On the extreme left a woman carrying an infant begs, looking up at the window; a little boy beside her holds out his hat for alms to the tax-collector. On the right a fat man gapes up at the window while a little boy picks his pocket of a hankerchief. The house is at a corner, and from its wall a lamp with oil, spilling it on the people below. A manservant and a maidservant on the extreme left peer through a half-opened door at two men seated at a round table covered with a white cloth on which are plates of peas, a decanter, and wineglasses. A waiter (left) is leaning towards them checking prices off on his fingers and saying: "I'm sure Gentlemen on inspection you'll find the charges very reasonable, nothing can be cheaper, fifteen shillings the peas! Ducks one pound one!!!" The man in the middle of the table looks at him with his mouth open; the man on the left holds up a sheet of paper on which is written "No. 4 Tim Fleecem Duck £1.1. Peas 0.15 s." He shouts: "Ducks!!! why my good friend they are Guinea Fowls!!!"

"A scene in the mouth of a cave with the sea in the background. The smuggler is Melville, in Highland dress, caught by Fox, Sheridan, and Whitbread, revenue officers wearing spurred top-boots. He kneels, with hands clasped, looking up at Whitbread (r.), who stands over him with a raised whip; he screams: "Marcy O' me wha can bear sick a lashing Indeed you shall ha it aw Gentlemen - ee'n to the last Baubee". Whitbread, his heavy lash inscribed 'Whitbreads Intire', answers: "Be quick then and dont trifle with us, we have got some more of your gang to look after!!" Fox (l.) is a spectator with his whip under his arm; he says: "I say lay it on well, remember he is an Old offender, we shall flog something out of him I am ready when you are tire'd." He stands by Sheridan, who holds Melville by the plaid, and raises a whip with a heavy lash inscribed 'Sherrys - Genuine - Stingo.' Sheridan says: "Aye! Aye! O Lord! what desperate hands my poor Friend has got into." In the middle distance (r.) Trotter, also in Highland dress, runs off to the right. with a large sack on his shoulders, inscribed 'Peculation Sack 50.000'; guineas fall from a rent in the sack. He looks over his shoulder, saying, "It will come to my turn Next so I'll trot off in time with this Triffle." On the ground (r.), by the rocky wall of the cave which borders the design, are a cask of 'Madeira' and three large sacks inscribed 'Peculation Sa[ck] 100.000'; 'Peculation Sack 50.000'; 'Peculation Sack 30.0 . . .'
