A group of women including a pair of Catholic missionary sisters are gathered around a woman seated on a bench and holding an infant. One of the missionary sisters holds a bottle. Another woman stands nearby with a toddler on her back., and The back of the postcard has no handwriting. Printed at the edge of the margin is "Les Fransicaines Missionnaires de Maire" "ont actuellement en pays de mission 145 maisons avec 156 ecoles plus 389 oeuvres pour l'enfance groupant 56,000 enfants. Also included in the International Mission Photography Archive. and Courtesy of Canton Christian College. These three Chinese women are unwinding silk cocoons on primitive hand reels. Beside each woman is a wooden tub of cocoons and a tiny charcoal heater. The cocoons are placed in scalding water to dissolve the sticky cement which binds the threads together. Seven or eight cocoons are unwound together to make one thread of silk. [now Guangzhou] Three women work outdoors, using reels to unwind the cocoons.
