Boswell holds his head, leaning on the table, and pointing with his left hand at an open book inscribed 'Twentieth Sunday after Trinity'; he looks with abject supplication at Johnson, who leans back in his chair, his right hand raised as if speaking oracularly. Boswell's forehead is bandaged, his shoes are unlatched, his breeches unbuttoned at the knee, from his coat-pocket protrudes 'Ogden' (see BMSat 7031). A water-bottle and a bowl are on the floor beside him. Johnson wears his top-boots. A pregnant girl weeps on the lad's shoulder while on the left her mother berates the lad. To the right behind the serjeant stands a drummer. The scene takes place in front of a tavern, the signboard of which shows the lower part of two, one-legged men and whose name is 'Fortune of War'. In the window sits a man in a cap smoking a pipe and smiling cynically while another looks around the corner of the door
