"Lord Eldon sits at a high desk above a table, with mace, &c., at which two barristers are writing. He raises his arms in astonishment at the sight of a still (left) inscribed 'The Q--n's Double Destlled [sic] Essence of Bergamot' [with 'ot' scored through and replaced by 'i']; from this the Queen's head emerges, facing the head of Bergami, which issues from an arm of the still. This is surrounded by smoke and stands on a bench, behind which on a low platform stand Louise Demont and Majocchi, pointing at the object, the latter saying: "Non me Ricordo." A barrister, probably Copley, stands near them, saying: "It's a strong proof but froieng [sic] brew'd and out of our power to discover the Makers." Eldon, dropping his pen, says: "This is cuesed [sic] strong it is certainly doubled proof of their Private works." A profile (? Liverpool) leans forward from the left margin, saying: "My L--ds he can swear to the Smell and Taste." Peers, some astonished, some amused, are seated on benches between Chancellor and witnesses. "The Duke of York, in a pilgrim's gown, wearing a mitre and with a crosier for his staff, approaches the corner of a house where two women, Mrs. Clarke and Miss Taylor, look eagerly from an open window. Behind him his path, 'Road to destruction', leads down from a country house in trees, Oatlands. Beside the path is a stone: 'Stumbling Block'. Near the house the Duchess of York kneels imploringly, raising her arms towards the distant Duke. Behind her is one of her many pet dogs (see British Museum Satires No. 11023). The Duke tramples on two open books: 'Thoughts on Connubial Happiness' and 'Thou shalt not commit Adultery'. He says: "Now for a meeting with my Dearest Dear". On the house many bills are posted: 'Man Traps are placed every Night in these grounds'; 'Diamonds by Mrs Clarke Lapidary to his Highness'; 'This evening will be performed Duke and No Duke [by Tate, 1685] By his Majesties Servts . . .'; 'Agency Office business transacted on moderate Terms'; 'Leakes Pills by appoint. . "The Duke and Duchess of York face each other, a small table between them; he sits (left), with his hands clasped and resting on the table; she stands (right), a small jewel-box in her left hand, holding out to him a string of jewels. A paper inscribed '17,000 . . .' lies on the table beside the Duke, whose words are etched above his head: 'Henceforth my follies and neglects shall cease And all to come be penitence and peace, Vice shall no more atract me with her Charms, Nor pleasure reach me, but in those dear arms.' She says, "My Jewels? trifles! not worth the speaking of, if weigh'd against a husband's peace; but let 'em purchase that, and the world's wealth is of less value". "A satirical representation of the duel between the Duke of York and Lennox. The Duke (left), calm and dignified, fires his pistol in the air; Lennox (right), his knees bending in obvious alarm, holds a pistol in each hand, saying, "I hope your H--gh--ss is satisfied now that I am a Man of Honor, by my firing thro' your hair? & that you will retract the opinion of my being a Coward". The Duke, whose hat is on the ground, answers, "Satisfied? yes I am satisfied! that your whole race are a set of dastards! - & you may fire at me till the day of Judgment, e'er I will retract my opinion - or honor a Coward, by putting him out of the World!" The seconds stand behind their principals: 'Lord Raw--n', in profile to the right, a pistol in each hand, says, "Gunpowder is disgrae'd when used upon such reptiles! make them eat their own words, till they are choak'd, thats the way to quiet Charles's-bastard-brood" (cf. BMSat 7507); 'Lord Wine--l--a' (right), looking very frightened, holds an arsenal of pistols under his left arm, a blunderbuss in his right hand, saying, "Would that I had not meddl'd in the business, or, that I could get over to the other side." "Heading to a rebus engraved below the design, giving the text of the sermon. An ugly parson (right) preaches in close proximity to the canopied pew of the Duke of York, in which the Duke sprawls, with one leg along the edge of the pew. Mrs. Clarke, between them, leans with folded arms on the edge of the pew, facing the Duke. O'Meara says: "Mrs Clark is the Text". The rebus or pictograph, sometimes anagrammatic, would be scarcely comprehensible without the key, unlike the usual 'hieroglyphic letter', e.g. British Museum Satiries No. 11228, &c. The text is on a printed slip: 'Grant me, I beseech you, O great and mighty Lord of the Land of Oats [Oatlands], a Bishopric; or, if it be more agreeable to your Royal Mind, let me be immediately made a Dean. O dearest Angel, Mrs. Clark! as you are my only Refuge in the Time of Trouble, and as you are the only Great Giver of Places in Church and State, let me entreat your Interest in my behalf! . . .
