A companion print to British Museum satire no. 6878: The country justice. Inside a watch-house, a burly watchman stands (left) facing an elderly constable who sits frowning in his arm-chair. He holds out a broken lantern and points to a thin, fashionably dressed, and apparently drunken man who stands beside him with closed eyes, holding a large stick in his left hand. Next to the constable is a clerk writing at a desk with a slanted top. The room is lit by a lantern slung from the roof. A map on the wall apparently represents the roads of the parish and the beats of the watchmen. A fire burns in a grate (right).

A clergyman in bands and gown, his hat on the pavement, squares up to a watchman holding a lantern and stick, his fists raised. He has evidently knocked out one watchman already, who lies on the ground, wig dislodged and still touching his lantern, while a third approaches from the left. "Diogenes stands in the House of Commons between the two front benches; both arms are thrown out towards Burdett with a dramatic gesture; in one hand is his lantern, illuminating the patriot at close range; small clouds at his feet indicate that he is a ghost. He turns his head to look steadily at three members on the front Ministerial bench (left), saying: "An Honest Man is the noblest work of God" [Pope, 'Essay on Man', quoted by Burns, cf. British Museum Satires No. 11562]. The three culprits (unrecognizable) register shame and terror, their hair standing on end. Burdett stands by the front bench (right) on which is his hat, displaying to the frightened Ministers (one intended for Perceval) a document headed 'Magna Charta--Pro Rege, lege, grege' [see British Museum Satires No. 11547]. Except for one member on the front bench, those behind Burdett stand, five being depicted, three of whom wave their hats. All the occupants of the gallery wave still more emphatically. In the background and on the left is the Speaker's Chair; the diminutive Abbot, author of the famous Warrant, see British Museum Satires No. 11545, &c., holds up a hand in astonished alarm. "The Prince of Wales (left) leads a goat with the head of Mrs. Fitzherbert (right) to the door of the forecourt of a large town-house, held partly open by the Duchess of York. She says, "O Dunder & Wonder! - what Cratur is dat which you are bringing here ? - relation of mine, indeed? - no, no! - me know no Nanny-goat-Princess! - so set off, with your bargain, you poor - Toasted - Cheese! you! - for she sha'nt come in here, to poison the house! - off! - off! - off." The Prince, who wears in his hat a leek, with his motto, 'ich dien', answers, "Not open the Toor ? - Cot-splutter-a-nails - when Nanny is come to see you, herself? - vhy isn't Nanny a Princess too ? - & a Velch Princess? - and hur is come to visit hur Brothers & hur Sisters! - & not to let hur in? why the Voman is mad, sure!" In place of a star he wears a medallion enclosing a pair of goat's horns. He holds his goat by a ribbon wreathed with roses. Mrs. Fitzherbert has goat's horns and wears a coronet with the Prince's feathers; she looks up at him with an expression of dignified surprise. ... The door of the Duke's house is surmounted by a pediment decorated with the Prussian eagle and pairs of doves (an emblem on the Duchess's state-bed, 'Lond.
