Abstract:
"A night scene, broadly burlesqued. Napoleon, in profile to the left, strides in furtive haste towards a massive gate, directing the beam of a dark lantern against it. From between his coat-tails a long white feather (see British Museum Satires No. 12613) floats behind him, emerging from a cluster of shorter ones. He wears an enormous bicorne, with a plume set in an ornament composed of a crown and olive-twigs (as in British Museum Satires No. 11998), a sash and sabre over his long coat, tasselled Hessians with huge spurs. A head wearing a night-cap looks through the bars which form the top of the gate under a stone arch, to say: "Rap--Rap--Ra--Who comes there--what Midnight disturbers are you." An officer (actually Caulaincourt) crouches at the gate holding the knocker which is set in a great lion's mouth, and beckons towards Napoleon, answering, "It's only Count Vincen"--Alias--Little Boney. the Imperial Fugitive--returned from Victory." The gate-keeper: "Alias-- who"--Alias the Divil you mean." In front of Napoleon's foremost foot a large frog leaps forward; behind him a lean fierce cur barks: "A Russian Cur-- Bow--Wow--Wow." A large label floats back from Napoleon's mouth, inscribed: "hist--is that the Croaking of Frogs I hear--I mistake--its' only the Sycophant Lads in Paris--hurra-ing at My unexpected and precipate [sic] return. thank my Luckey Stars--I have got out of the clutches of them Damd Cossack Curs"--or I should have been food for Bears--long before this time." Beside the gate is a sentry-box, in which a sentry completely muffled up and wearing a night-cap, sleeps, seated with folded arms, clasping his musket. "Napoleon (left) and Joseph sit side by side on low seats or stools, both with a hand on each knee. They have large, elongated heads broadly caricatured (as in British Museum Satires No. 10604, &c.) and look sideways at each other with drawn-down mouths and wrinkled foreheads. Napoleon is in uniform, wearing a feathered bicorne; Joseph wears a crown with Spanish dress, ermine-trimmed robe, and the order of the Golden Fleece. His seat is, very inconspicuously, a commode. At his feet is a sceptre with a scroll inscribed 'Servata Fides Cineri'. Napoleon says: "A pretty piece of Business we have made of it Brother Joe." "A scene on the wild and rocky shore of Elba where Napoleon has just landed. He stands on the beach in deep dejection, in profile to the right, looking down, and saying: "Ah Woe is me seeing what I have and seeing what I see" ['Hamlet', III. i]. A dog befouls his boot. He is the centre of attraction to uncouth peasants who surround him, while many more approach through a defile in the mountains. A gross and hideous woman, holding a long tobacco-pipe, puts her hand on his shoulder, saying, "Come cheer up my little Nicky I'll be your Empress." A man beside her points to a ship at anchor; a boat filled with people is rowing out to her. The peasants all grin broadly. Near Napoleon (left) is seated a hideous, barelegged woman suckling an infant and smoking a long pipe. An almost naked child clings to her shoulders, putting out his tongue at Napoleon, as does a man standing just behind him. In the foreground, Napoleon's Mameluke, Ali, sits on the ground, beside a pile of portmanteaux inscribed 'Boneys Baggage'; he averts his head from the humiliating spectacle; his sabre lies beside him. An odd ape-like creature squats on the extreme left. On the extreme right a fisherman, staring over his shoulder at Napoleon, is about to jump ashore or push off in his boat. An anti-Napoleon broadside including an engraved, cartographic bust of Napoleon above two columns of letterpress in Dutch, German, English and French. The face of Napoleon is formed of carcases of war victims: on the collar are waves of the sea; a "hand" is placed as the epaulet while on the cuff is 'R' (for Regent), round the wrist 'Honi Soit ', on the fingers are the letters 'A', 'R', 'P', 'S', 'E' (for the Allies). A drawing the Rhenish Confedracy [sic] under the flimsy symbol of the cobweb: and the "spider" is a symbolic emblem of the vigilance of the Allies
