Abstract:
"Napoleon sits on a stool or low-backed hair holding the two younger sons of the King of Spain, dressed as infants in long robes, one on each knee. His legs are wide astride, and with his jackboots he rocks two large wicker cradles on the left and right. Both are inscribed 'Imperial Cradle'; on the right sleep the King and Queen, the latter wearing a nieht-cap, and with her back to her husband. The head of the cradle is inscribed 'The Good Old King and his Amiable Consort.' On the left Ferdinand, a burly infant, sleeps in the cradle inscribed 'Prince of Austurias' [sic]. Napoleon wears a large feathered bicorne, and looks down with a twisted cynical expression at the children on his knee, both fast asleep with expressionless faces. A collar is padlocked round each neck, inscribed 'Antonio and Carlos'. He says: "Hush a bye - Hush a bye - you shall have your crowns again - but I dont know when!"."--British Museum online catalogue

Abstract:
"A spider with the head of Napoleon is the centre of a large irregular web which stretches across the design. He wears his plumed bicorne, and his head is in profile to the left devouring two 'Spanish Flies' which fly into his mouth (Charles IV and Ferdinand). His bloated body is inscribed 'Unbounded Ambition'. The other flies in the web are Austrian Fly (left), with a number of little flies beside it; a swarm of 'Small Flies innumerable' is scattered thickly over the upper part of the web; on the outer circumference (right) the 'Pope Fly', saying, "I am afraid I shall be draggd in." Below: the 'Venetian Fly', a mere corpse; 'Italian Fly'. On the lower part of the web: 'Hamburgh Fly', 'Prussian Fly', 'Hanoverian Fly', 'Etrurion Fly'. The 'Portugeuse Fly', with a bottle (of Port) for a body, is on the circumference of the web. Below the 'Austrian Fly', 'Dutch Fly', with a human head smoking a pipe. Just touching the circumference with its front legs, below the Prussian and Hamburg Flies, is the 'Russian Fly', with the head of the Tsar, wearing a cocked hat; he says: "I declare I was half in the web, before I made the discovery." A large fly flying below the web (left), with a human head wearing a jewelled turban, is the 'Turkish Fly'; he says: "I am afraid it will be my turn next." In the upper left. corner, outside the web, is a solid John Bull, with four wings. He looks down at the spider, saying, "Ay you may look Master Spider but I am not to be caught in your web." "Napoleon, 'Corsican Tiger', with the body of a tiger, and wearing his feathered bicorne, puts his fore-paws on a bunch of four yelping and prostrate dogs, one with a collar inscribed 'Royal Greyhound' (the collars of the others being hidden). He turns his head in profile to the left. to glare savagely at a pack of 'Patriotic Greyhounds'. The two foremost bark fiercely at him, their heads close to his, others are streaking down a steep hill (l.) towards him. Narrow water divides the land on which Napoleon stands from three other projecting pieces of land on the r. In the foreground a 'Dutch Frog' sits smoking a pipe and watching the conflict, saying, "It will be my turn to have a slap at him next." On a cliff behind the frog 'Iohn Bull', a 'cit', stands aiming his musket at the tiger; he says: "There was a little Man, And he had a little gun, And his Bullets were made of lead, D------n me but we'll manage him amongst us. "On a more distant plain a bear on its hind legs faces an eagle with three crowned heads: they are 'Russian Bear & Austrian Eagle', and are linked together by a heavy chain attached to collars on the bear and eagle. "A (tricolour) top with the head of Napoleon spins, above the ground, savagely lashed by representatives of the Allies. His arms and his legs have already been severed from his body, now represented only by the madly spinning top. The most violently active is Blücher (left) stripped to the shirt, his coat and hat thrown on a drum on the extreme left, beside which lie his gloves and baton. Facing them is Wellington (right) equally effective, stern, but less savage. Full-face, and immediately behind the top is the Tsar, left hand on hip; his whip is inscribed 'Knout'. Between him and Wellington is Schwarzenberg (or Francis I). Bernadotte stands rather behind, between Blücher and Alexander, both hands on his hips; he holds a whip but is an amused spectator. Behind (right) the future King of Holland, crowned and wearing a star, but dressed in the breeches and jacket of the Dutchman in English caricature, sits under a tree on a cask of 'Hollands'. He watches delightedly, holding up one of Napoleon's legs inscribed 'United Netherlands'. The other leg, the thigh inscribed 'Swisslad, the boot Italy, lies near Blücher. At Wellington's feet is the right arm inscribed Spain & Portugal'; the left arm, inscribed 'Germany', is near Schwarzenberg. Napoleon's orb and (broken) sceptre lie near him, with some of the feathers from the large hat which is still on his head; his horrified and shrieking profile faces Blücher. In the background (left) is a road along which a carriage drives off, drawn by four galloping horses. It contains tiny figures: Marie Louise, crowned and looking behind her, and the little King of Rome also crowned and waving a sceptre. Two soldiers are on the box, two others sit behind. In the air behind Bernadotte a demon flies off to the left, with Joseph Bonaparte clutching his barbed tail. The latter, his crown flying off, looks back horrified, exclaiming "O! "A smiling bearded Cossack strides towards the spectator, spear in hand, with the left hand he places his conical furred cap over a tiny terrified Napoleon. He says: "I'll Extinguish Your little French-- Farthing--Rush light--Master Boney." Napoleon exclaims, trying to run away: "Death and Fury!--how I burn with Rage--those "Frightful--" Contempable [sic] Cossacks has Clouded all my hopes." They are on a plateau: the head of the Cossack's horse is on the extreme left; troops are marching on the plain, where a Cossack is galloping. Abstract:
"Marie Louise (left) sits on the edge of a canopied bed adjusting her garter (she is perhaps adapted from Mrs. Fitz-herbert in Gillray's 'The Morning after Marriage', British Museum Satires No. 7298). Her back is to Napoleon, who sits up in bed turning to the Devil (right) who approaches from behind the curtain, pitchfork in hand. The Emperor's hand rests on an open book: 'Aristotle's Master-piece or the Secrets of Nature Reveal'd'. He says: "My good friend I smell your approach, and know what you are come about, I am loth to part with Maria yet, and am consulting this book before I determine, yes! yes! she must sleep with her Aunts & Cousins if it is necessary for my Reputation I'll not he laughd at". The Devil, who is nude, with horns, webbed wings, and barbed tail, answers: "Poh! Poh! dont gammon me about books, you know your impotence, send her to Heaven, or I'll withdraw my protection and you'll come to Hell presto". Marie Louise says: "Oh dear! if this is the deligt's of Love I am surfeited already, to be sure few husbands disturb their wives rest more than mine does, but it's with starting & kicking in his sleep & crying have mercy on me. I suppose Josephine used to worry him so. bless me what a smell of brimstone there is!" On the floor (right) lie a book, 'Life of Henry the VIII of England', and two documents: 'Medical opinion on ...' and 'Progeny of the Emperor of Persia'. "Bonaparte (right) sits at a small table writing with fierce decision; the second and third consuls sit facing him, biting their pens in pompous indecision, their papers are blank. The latter wear the flamboyant dress of the Directors (see BMSat 9199), Cambacéiès (left) has thick gouty legs. Bonaparte wears similar dress, but with a more fantastic cocked hat, in which, besides enormous feathers, is a large sheaf of olive-branches tied with tricolour (symbol of his overture to George III, see BMSat 9512); he wears jack-boots and a large sabre inscribed 'Liberté'. He writes the 'Nouvelle \ Constitution \ Grand Consul Buonaparte \ Tout en Tout Buonaparte \ Bu . . .' Beside him are papers docketed: 'Constitution pour l'Avenir: Buonaparte Grande Monarque' and 'Confiscations'. On the ground are torn papers: 'Vielles Constitutions'; 'Droit [de] l'Homme'; his foot rests on 'Constitution of 1793'. Behind, Sieyès, a lean grotesque savant, holds apart with both hands, with a violence that suggests impotence, a curtain which stretches across the design, revealing papers in pigeon-holes inscribed: 'Constitution de Parade', 'Constitution du Sang', 'Constitution de Foutre', 'Constitution de Despotism', 'Constitution de Vol[eur?]'. Above them is a model of a guillotine. Above the curtain is a festoon of tricolour, inscribed 'Vive le Constitution Une et Invisible', centred by crossed blunderbusses. The tablecloth is looped up to show a group of tiny fire-lit demons forging fetters. Beneath the design: 'The above are true Likenesses of Cambaceres, - Le-Brun - the Abbé Seiyes, and Buonaparte, drawn at Paris Novr 1799'. "Napoleon and Marie Louise are awkwardly seated on a throne (right) watching a comet representing the King of Rome, while the child's gouvernante proudly holds him up to gaze at the phenomenon through a telescope. The comet is a disk containing a naked child wearing a cocked hat, and holding a bowl; a gallic cock stands on his posterior, from which the comet's tail issues, reaching the real child. Five grotesque and elderly Frenchmen kneel with gestures of adoration (left); one kisses the toe which the Empress holds out. They have plans of the heavens; on the ground beside them is a plan showing the child-comet surrounded by stars and a waning moon. Napoleon wears a plumed bicorne and Hessian boots; he looks through a telescope, seated on the edge of the throne, right leg raised and resting on Marie Louise. The King of Rome, who as usual has his father's features (see British Museum Satires No. 11719), wears a similar hat and a little shirt. His gouvernante, Mme de Montesquiou, is dressed as nourrice rather than court lady.
