"An elderly suitor in old-fashioned dress (right) and a youngish fashionably dressed woman (left) sit on upright chairs, the only furniture visible in an elegant room. He looks towards her with a gesture of deprecating reproach; she bends towards him, holding at arm's length to the left a cross and chain taken from an open jewel-box which she holds. A French window is behind her, through which appear the tops of hollyhocks. A descending staircase is seen through an open door on the extreme right.
