Abstract:
"An elegant schoolmistress in a neat parlour addresses two visitors, a fat and over-dressed farmer's wife with a daughter of about fifteen, similarly dressed and resembling her mother. On the right is a piano with open music, and a chair on which is propped a needlework picture of Charlotte mourning under a weeping willow, at a tomb with an urn inscribed 'Werter'. The governess holds in her hand a card: 'Terms of B[on] Tons School'; she points to the picture, saying, "You would perhaps like the Young Lady to work something in silks Madam! there is a pretty subject, Charlotte at the Tomb of Werter". The visitor exclaims: "A very pretty piece I pertest! my Dater has a Genii for Drawing! Penelope my dear! you shall work Charlotte at the Tub of Water". The girl, delighted, answers: "La Mother! He is directed to the right and looks at the spectator. Beside him are a decanter and glass and a book: 'British Peera[ge]'. Twenty pairs of people, arranged in panels in four rows, the first eight of which are engaged in a range of activities in which the pair misunderstand each other owing to mispronunciation indicating their differences in class. The next four panels illustrate scenes in which the pair debate the virtues and benefits of drinking various spirits. The final eight panels depict the attempts of a "Master Sargent" to train a country yokel as a soldier

In the image at the top: Four ladies, fashionably dressed, sit round a table dividing the profits of 'the Faro Bank'. On the table are heaps of guineas with cheques or banknotes, a sword, a ribbon and star, a paper: 'Bond 200 . . half Pay . . Faro'. The two central figures seated behind the table are Lady Archer (with an angry expression) and Lady Buckinghamshire facing each other in profile, their breasts much exposed. On the extreme left sits a young and good-looking woman, her chin concealed by a swathing round the neck; she watches the dispute warily, her arms folded. Facing her (right) an older woman reads through a glass a paper inscribed 'Hond Sir please to pay Lady Bilkem one Thousand Pound for your Dutiful Son Dupe'. These two are probably Mrs. Concannon and Mrs. Sturt, the other two fashionable and notorious holders of faro-banks. Lighted candle-sconces decorate the wall. The near edge of the table forms the lower edge of the design. In the image on the bottom, titled "St Giles's: Four prostitutes in a ramshackle room are grouped, much as the four above, round a table on which their night's plunder is spread: seals, watches, &c. They are younger, handsomer, and have pleasanter expressions than the women of fashion; their breasts are similarly exposed, though their dress is ragged

"In the foreground (left) is a crowd wielding battledores who send small puppet-like M.P.s high into the air. On the right is the House of Commons represented by a corner of a dilapidated building with a high Gothic doorway. To this men and one fat Billingsgate woman are hurrying with flat baskets on their heads, on which are heaped more M.P.s. The crowd is cheerful and in general fashionably dressed. They shout "No Corn Bill [often repeated]," "Keep the game alive," and "there he goes." One with patched clothes and the hat of a dustman or coal-heaver, shouts to his victim, a lawyer in wig and gown, "Now for it Mr Garrow." Most of the shuttlecock M.P.s register silent dismay; one with gouty legs exclaims "Oh! my Heels," another who is bald shouts "Oh! my head." Most of the 'mackerel' lie limply on their baskets; one struggles to rise, saying, "Faith & I never was in such a Flood before--I really beleive I'm dead--but However dead or alive an Irishman will always do his duty." Over the doorway is 'St Stephens.' in large letters. Within, the (burlesqued) Speaker is seen in his Chair, extending arms and legs in terrified astonishment; behind the table are two Clerks. Only the Government benches are visible; these are empty, but a man is indicated in the gallery. Outside, standing between the two groups of the mob, two constables holding their staffs consult gloomily. One says "We had better let them alone"; the other answers "I think so." On the ground (right) is a pile of bricks, stones, spiked knuckle-dusters, and a spiked club with a bag of: 'Pepper for the Piccadilly Squad'."--British Museum online catalogue
