Abstract:
"Blücher stands on the shore, directed to the left, holding out at arm's length, and by the scruff of the neck, an animal (as much like a fox as a dog) with the head of Napoleon. The Emperor, in profile to the left, wears his petit chapeau, and gauntlet gloves, so that he has human hands. In a heap at Blücher's feet lie Napoleon's discarded uniform, crown, sceptre, sword, and an eagle. Along the shore runs an officer shouting in terror, his arms raised above his head. Near him a small boat with sail and oars lies at the edge of the water; a man climbs in with a sack on his shoulder inscribed '20.000 a year'. On the horizon is a small island, 'Island of Elba', above which fly carrion birds. On the right in the middle distance is another scene; a closely packed group of royalists and allied soldiers, in front of which stands Louis XVIII, with clasped hands, while a man places a crown on his head; Talleyrand, wearing a long gown, and with a surgical shoe on his right foot, obsequiously proffers a paper: 'A List of Ministers for your Majesty's Approbation'. Behind Talleyrand is a bishop with a crosier, and wearing a mitre which suggests a papal tiara. A woman holding up a laurel-wreath stands on the right. Behind these figures appear the heads of mounted soldiers and hands waving hats. The whole group is dominated by large white flags, the most prominent covered with fleur-de-lis and inscribed 'Restoration of Louis XVIII'. "Napoleon and Josephine are in the centre of an elaborate processional design. Individuals and groups are identified by eleven captions in the lower margin. The background is formed of close ranks of French soldiers, with a forest of caps, spears, pikes, and banners receding in perspective. The front row, facing the procession, are grenadiers at attention with bayoneted muskets, the letter 'N' in front of their bearskins. They are in shadow; those behind Napoleon are obscured by dense clouds of smoke from a censer; next them (l.) grenadiers blow trumpets and French horns. The procession is led, as by a drum-major, by the posturing and theatrical figure of 'His Imperial Highness Prince Louis-Buonaparte Marbœuf - High Constable of the Empire' [Marbeuf was his godfather] on the extreme right. He wears tight-fitting archaic dress, with a feathered coronet, a cloak trailing from one shoulder, buskins, and sabre. He carries a tall staff surmounted by a fleur-de-lis. Next come 'The Three Imperial Graces, viz. Thier Imp. Highs Princess Borghese [Pauline], Princess. Louis (cher amie of ye Emperor) & Princess Joseph-Bonaparte' [Hortense and Julie] - three slim young women, very scantily draped, scatter roses. All wear feathered coronets with long snaky curls on their shoulders; they resemble the sisters of Napoleon in BMSat 10072. The ground (l. to r.) is strewn with the flowers they have scattered. Next walks 'Madame Talleyrand (ci devant Mrs Halhead the Prophetess conducting the Heir Apparent in ye Path of Glory'. A grossly fat woman leads by the hand the little Napoleon-Charles, son of Louis (b. 10 Oct. 1802). The child goose-steps arrogantly, holding out a sceptre in his left hand. He is dressed much like his father, but with the addition of a ribbon and star. Mme Talleyrand wears a feathered coronet and an enormous nosegay; she holds a fan on which is a goat. This, and her patched face, indicate her dissolute past. Slightly behind her, and on her right., hobbles 'Talleyrand-Perigord. - Prime Minister & King at Arms bearing the Emperor's Geneology.' He is burlesqued, with a 'cheese-cutter' shin, and a r. foot supported by blocks under the shoe. On his left. shoulder he carries a framed genealogical tree, and hung to his person are crests and symbols in rectangular frames. Napoleon's family tree issues from 'Buone Butcher' and, passing through 'Buone Cuckold', terminates in 'Napoleone Emperor', which is crowned. "Marie Louise, a handsome and buxom young termagant, has seized the imperial crown and sceptre, and threatens Napoleon (left) who crouches behind the smaller of two Chairs of State on the seat of which is his tricorne hat. She looks towards him, one toe resting on the seat of the chair, the crown raised as if she was about to hurl it; she declaims: "By the Head of Jove, I hate him worse than Famine or Diseases, Perish his Family, let inveterate Hate Commence between our Houses from this Moment, And meeting never let them bloodless part." The sceptre she holds out above the head of Talleyrand (right) who has fallen on his back and raises his hands to protect his head, shouting, "Be gar she will give us all de finishing Stroke". He is unrecognizable except for his crutch and his lame leg with its surgical shoe. Across his breeches are the words 'I shall never rise again'. Napoleon exclaims distractedly: "Oh Tally Tally rise and rally". Behind is a tall ghost-like figure (? Louis XVI) clutching a sheet round his curiously drawn form, and shouting "Marblue--Vat a Crown Cracker she be". Behind the Empress is the 'Coronation Chair', surmounted by a battered crown from which flies off a cock inscribed 'Gallic Cock Roupee'. In the foreground lie heaped-up crowns, including two imperial crowns, a Papal tiara (cf. British Museum Satires no. 11360), the iron crown of Italy (as in British Museum Satires no. 10432), and a laurel wreath."--British Museum online catalogue
