"Fox, as a quack doctor, addresses a mob from the front of a platform which rests upon five beer-barrels inscribed 'Whitbreads entire' (cf. BMSat 8638). Four other mountebanks are performing. Fox wears the full wig and old-fashioned laced coat and waistcoat of a doctor; he points to a young man (Bedford) behind him (left) who stands on his head, coins pouring from his pocket into a box. A Pierrot (Grey) stands behind the platform holding a trumpet and saying: "Turn me Grey Gemmen if I dont read you the particulars of his curing 30,000 Patients in one day; when Brother cit. has done tumbling". On a slack-rope stretching across the left part of the platform is little Lord Lauderdale, holding a balancing pole. He and Bedford are dressed as acrobats. On the right is the doctor's zany, Sheridan, wearing a fool's cap and a tunic and trousers dotted with representations of the Devil. He scatters, and kicks towards the spectators below him, a shower of paper scrolls inscribed: 'An Infaliable cure for a bad constitution'; 'Aether for Arguments'; 'Caustics for Crimps' [cf. BMSat 8484]; 'Mercury for Ministers'; 'Preparations against Prosecution'; 'Powder [cf. BMSat 8629] for Placemen' [twice]; 'Pain for the Poor' [cf. BMSat 8146]; 'A Rope for Reeves' [cf. BMSat 8699]; 'Gibets for Justices' [cf. BMSat 8686]; 'Aqua Regis for Royalists'. The crowd (right), who are three-quarter length, eagerly hold out their hands to catch the papers. Next the platform is a well-dressed man resembling Grafton. The man on the extreme right is a butcher wearing a bonnet-rouge. Fox says: "Dis is de first Tumbler in de Vorld Gemmen, dat is Citoyen de Bedforado, who vas stand so long upon his head dat all de money vas Tumble out of his pockets; de Next is Citoyen Van Lathertalo, who's trick upon de slack rope are delightfull it is expected he vil von Day dance on de Tight Rope ha ha!!" A man dressed as a militiaman, standing prominently beside the platform, raises a hand from which two fingers are missing; he shouts "All. All." The Duke of Wellington flys in a cloudy sky on a large quill pen, holding a pair of reins which are attached to the tip of the pen. From the tip hangs a scroll which reads "Bill for the relief of Roman Catholics." The point of the pen strikes George IV's eye; he stands in profile on the far right and exclaims "Oh, my eye the fellow has blinded me." Wellington looks over his shoulder at a bird with the head of Grey who flies after him from the left, beneath the pen's feather. Grey calls, "I say you Old Soldier you have stole one of my feathers! Hollo'a stop thief."

"The beam of a pair of scales is suspended from a vertical bar terminating in a ring which encircles one of many solid rays from a large sun (l.) surmounted by the Prince of Wales' coronet and feathers. The 'Rising-Sun' (see BMSat 10258) is partly obscured by dark clouds, but its rays extend across the design and illuminate especially Sidmouth and Ellenborough. The former is poised triumphantly on the cross-beam, depressing the r. scale with his foot, while he holds on his shoulders Ellenborough in judge's wig and gown, who manipulates the scale in the same direction. This lower scale contains the 'Broad-Bottomites' ie the Grenvillites, or New Opposition, the other, the 'No-Bottomites', i.e. the Foxites, or Old Opposition. In the latter (l.) the occupants hold the ropes with expressions of anxiety; the inscription suggests that they lack 'bottom' or endurance (a pugilistic phrase). Fox is the most prominent, between Erskine (l.), in Chancellor's wig and gown and with the Purse of the Great Seal, and Grey (r.). Moira, in cocked hat and regimentals, stands stiffly behind. Fox and Grey have bonnets rouges but do not wear them. The other bowl contains Grenville, one hand on his fat nephew Lord Temple; the heavy posteriors for which the family were noted take up much of the bowl. Windham waves his hat triumphantly. Of two other partly obscured occupants one resembles Lord Henry Petty. The scales are suspended above the curve of the globe on which Great Britain and the Continent are indicated. Behind the North Pole (r.) is a setting sun containing a royal crown; its feeble rays are outshone by the heavy beams of the rising sun (or son). "The procession has advanced to the door of a church (r.) which a parson closes, dropping his prayer-book, open at the 'Burial Service'. Only his arms and robe are visible; he says: " - no Burial here, for Broad-Bottom: - he died a Roman; - besides, - 'tis a felo-de-se case; - take him to the next 4 cross-roads; & the Family has a large Stake always ready!" Only the acolyte at the head of the procession has realized this check: little Lord Henry Petty drops his bell and candle and capers in dismay. The three pall-bearers (a fourth is hidden behind the coffin) are (l. to r.) Sidmouth, Lord St. Vincent, and Windham. All wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks, and clutch handkerchiefs, weeping large tears. Below the coffin are seen the robes and bare sandalled feet of monks. On the top of the coffin is Grenville, face downwards, and showing the back of his wig, and a dome- shaped hump denoting his famous 'broad-bottom' (see BMSat 10530). At the four corners are ostrich plumes. On a placard on the side of the pall: 'Gul: Baro: de Broad-Bottom Obiit die Martis 24° A: D. 1807'. Behind the coffin walks the Pope, in his tiara and robes, weeping and supported between the Marquis of Buckingham and his son Lord Temple. Both weep with gestures of extravagant grief; both are dressed as priests. Behind, thin and ascetic, is Howick, a barefooted monk, holding up the Pope's long robes. Behind walk arm-in-arm, both shambling and dissipated, Sheridan clutching a bottle of 'Brandy' and General Fitzpatrick, from whose pocket hangs a paper: 'Tears of Hedge Lane' [a squalid resort of prostitutes in Westminster]. Both wear mourning hats, scarves, and cloaks. Next, Erskine and Ellenborough walk together; Erskine claps to his eye his beloved and discarded Chancellor's wig. At the end of the procession and on the extreme left. are Lauderdale and Moira wearing his cocked hat with a mourning scarf and cloak. All weep, registering deep distress. "An altered copy of British Museum Satires No. 10389. The two principal figures are substantially the same, but Mrs. Fitzherbert's expression is less subtle; she looks down at her charge with an exulting smile. The feathers in her hair are set in a fillet inscribed 'Ich Dien', her breasts are almost bare, her drapery is more swirling. Her pouch is inscribed 'Amusements for Young Minds', its contents differ, and her book is a 'Missal'. Above them (left) ls inscribed: 'Angels ever bright and fair" Take, Oh Take me to thy Care,"'. The altar is larger and closer to the ascending figures. In place of the Virgin, the Prince of Wales (half length) stands behind it, looking down at the 'Guardian-Angel'. On the altar, which is inscribed 'Sanctum Sanctorum' is an irradiated chalice. The attendant cherubs are (left) Derby, (?) Grey, Grenville; and (right) Norfolk, Burdett, and Windham. Two cherubs have descended from the circle (right) and look fixedly at close range towards the child; they are Fox and Sheridan. The rays are inscribed: 'Bulls', 'Dispensations', 'Indulgences', 'Luxuries', 'Consecrations', 'Cannonizations', 'Remissions', 'Pardons', 'Beatifications', 'Permissions'. "William IV stands, very erect and stern, in profile to the right, holding at arm's length a birch-rod inscribed 'Reform'. Behind him, as ushers, on the extreme left, Brougham and Grey stand in consultation. The King says to a body of discomfited schoolboys (right): 'Get you gone and never let me see your faces again till you are Reformed'. The boys are (left to right) Wellington, wearing a peaked cap and an old, over-large, military coat, and carrying a bag, walks hand in hand with Peel who wears an ill-fitting policeman's tunic and holds a slate on which is scrawled the figure of a policeman (see British Museum satires no. 15768, &c). Beside and behind them are Sadler and Wetherell. In front of Peel walks Twiss with a book under his arm; next him is the small Sugden wearing a pinafore. Taller than the others are Hunt wearing a hunting-cap and holding ajar of his blacking (see British Museum satires no. 16575) and Sir R. Wilson wearing a smock and a cap and holding a slate inscribed 'Bob Wilson'. Wellington to Peel: 'Oh Bobby--Bobby what shall we do now?' Wetherell, looking back, says (as late M.P. for Boroughbridge, cf. British Museum Satires No. 16602): 'I am afraid I shall never be admitted into the school again'. "A satire on the approaching election for the Chancellorship of Oxford University. Grenville, dressed as a cardinal, heads a small procession towards the Devil, who wears a robe on which is a large cross, and holds the bland mask with which he has been hiding his face. Grenville, bowing low, and deferentially holding his large hat, holds out a paper: Catholic Petition for the vacant Chancellorship with a Plan for Erecting a New Popish Sanhedrim on the ruins of old Alma-Mater, The Devil says: Well done my Children! This is all the Convocation I would have; in his left hand is a pitchfork. The Marquis of Buckingham, dressed as a Jesuit, stands behind him, one hand on his shoulder, the other holding his barbed tail. Beside him is Canning (unrecognizable) wearing a Jesuit's biretta. Beside the Devil is a greyhound with the head of Grey, its collar inscribed Popish Gray Hound. Immediately behind Grenville walks the Pope, wearing his tiara, and holding his cross; he holds up Grenville's robe on which is a large cross. Napoleon crouches behind the Pope, holding on to his robes and hiding under his mantle. He wears a crown, with uniform and spurred boots; his hand is on the hilt of his sword. Behind walk together Temple, enormously fat and dressed as a monk, and his brother, Lord George Grenville, similarly dressed. The former carries the Host, the latter a lighted candle. In the background rows of bishops and clergymen face the procession. Bishops in the front row, humbly sweeping the ground with their mitres, bow low, each clasping a Mass Book, while those behind cheer with raised mortar-board, hand, or Mass Book. On five of the books are the names of bishoprics: York [Vernon], St Asaph [Cleaver], London [Randolph], Oxford [Moss], Norwich [Bathurst].
