The King and Queen sit on chairs of state intently watching a rectangular tank in which Napoleon as Gulliver sails his little boat, manoeuvring the single sail. Behind the King's chair Lord Salisbury stands stiffly, holding his wand of office; the gold key is attached to his coat-pocket: he has the straight shapeless legs that Gillray always gives him. ... Two princesses sit beside the tank on the Queen's right; like the Queen, each holds up her fan. Two younger princesses stand behind. Two little pages (left) blow violently at the sail to propel the boat, while a third laughs. Two beefeaters (right) grin broadly. A satire on Napoleon. "The 'dwarf' (Lord Kirkcudbright) stands beside Glumdalclitch's empty chair at the dinner-table. A marrow-bone stands erect on the plate; from this emerges Napoleon, three-quarter length., wearing his bicorne and clenching both fists. The 'dwarf' says: "There you little insignificant Pigmy, I've Bone'd you." Kirkcudbright, in profile to the right., is based on Gillray's caricature, see BMSat 9905, head, figure, dress and sword being closely copied; but he stands chapeau-bras, and the arms and hands are differently posed: r. hand on the edge of the table, left hand held up derisively above Napoleon. "Three allied generals (left) hold the long handle of a shovel (peel) on which is a dish containing a tiny Napoleon. This they try to push into a baker's oven, but are hindered by the Austrian emperor, who holds the door of the oven, feigning to be trying to open it, but actually holding it at an angle which prevents the entry of the dish. The leading baker is Blücher, wearing an apron over his uniform, and without a hat; he looks sternly at Francis, saying, "Pull away Frank! you Keep us waiting!" General Mikhail Woronzoff, young and handsome, immediately behind Blücher, pushes hard, saying, "In with it Blücher." On the extreme left is Bernadotte, one hand on Woronzoff's shoulder, saying, "I tell you what, Woronzow, the Hinges want a little Russia Oil." Francis I, who like the others wears uniform with jack-boots, but has (baker's) over-sleeves to the elbow, says with an expression of startled alarm: "This door Sticks! I dont think I shall get it open?!" A weathercock surmounts his cocked hat. Wellington comes up (right), poking him in the back with his baker's tray on which are two pies. He says: "Shove alltogather [sic] Gentlemen! D-me shove door & all in!" His two pies are 'Soult Pie', with two spurred jack-booted legs projecting through the crust, and a pie with spires and other buildings, with a flag inscribed 'Bourdeaux'. He wears an apron and the order of the Golden Fleece as well as the star of the Garter. A fat, grotesque Dutchman sits on a flat cushion gazing up at the oven; he holds, but does not use, a pair of bellows. In his conical hat is a tobacco-pipe. The fire under the oven is filled with broken eagles and fragments of weapons. Among the debris in the recess for ashes is a crown. Above the oven is the inscription 'Allied Oven' surmounted by a crown and cross-bones. In the shadow formed by the half-open door, a skull (Death) waits to receive Napoleon, who lies on his back, kicking violently, and shouting "Murder! Murder!!"; he wears a large plumed bicorne. "A winding river flows (left to right) towards a hill in the background surmounted by a temple of Fame. In the foreground (left) is a 'Dunghill of Republican Horse Turds'; in the stream float turds from the dunghill, while farther up are golden apples, crowned and inscribed. The foremost is 'English-Pippin', close behind are 'Imperial-Pippin' and 'Russian-Pippin'; they are followed by a (turbaned) 'Turkish-Pippin' and a small 'Neapolitan' [Pippin]. From a mass of floating dung emerges the profile head of Bonaparte, wearing a feathered cocked hat inscribed 'First Horse Turd'; this is the central and dominating object in the river; from his mouth issues a large label: 'A ha! par ma foi - how We Apples Swim!' Lumps of dung close behind him are inscribed 'Second Horse Turd' [Cambacérès], 'Third Horse Turd' [Lebrun], and 'Seyes' [sic]. They are followed by 'Massena', 'Jourdan', 'Talleyrand'. A spreading column of thick smoke arises from the dunghill, which is composed of inscribed fragments, from which in the left foreground tiny heads emerge, the dominant one being Fox, who says: "Caira! Caira! - chacun à son tour! We shall all Swim in our turns"; next him is 'Envy'. Tierney, the second head, says: "Yes! Yes! - none of Us was born to be Drowned". The others are Sheridan, Nicholls, Erskine, and (slightly smaller) Burdett, Derby, Taylor. The hand that holds the pole holds also, by the hair, a bunch of bleeding heads which form a grisly garland round it. In his right hand is his sabre. He is surrounded by women; two embrace him, others hasten up; he swaggers with raised left leg, saying, "There you rouges, there! there's the Boney Part - twenty more killed them!! twenty more killed them too!! I have destroyed half the Army with this same Toledo." The women say, respectively: "Bless the Warrior that saved our Virgin charms"; "take care I'll smother him with Kisses"; "Oh! what frightful Heads how ravishing they look, - they would have used us ill I am sure"; "ha ha, thats, that great man little Boney, how glum he looks." An elderly spinster exclaims: "ah bless him he has saved us from Death and Vileation." A handsome woman turns to a tall young man in civilian dress on the extreme left, saying, "There you Poltroon look how that noble Hero's Caressed!" "The infant King of Rome sits on the lap of his Governess to receive the compliments of a long procession of deputies. She offers the child's bare posterior, from which issues an explosion, to the lips of the foremost deputy who kneels obsequiously on a cushion. The child has his father's face, as in British Museum Satires No. 11719, &c., and wears a cocked hat and military tunic; he flourishes a rattle, ignoring the homage. The deputies all wear long robes over court dress with sword and are burlesqued; the second holds his nose, many take snuff. The long procession recedes in perspective (right). The Governess is also grotesque and elderly, wearing old-fashioned dress and an elaborate frilled cap. She sits on the little King's throne which is on a dais. It is topped by the iron crown of Italy with a sceptre and baton; on the back is an imperial eagle above a wreath enclosing the letters 'R R' [Rex Romae]. The leading deputy: "Madam Governess. not one of us can behold without a most lively interest, that August Infant--on whom rest so many Destinies, and whose Age and Charming--Qualiteys, inspires the Most tender Sentiments in the French and Surrounding Nations." She answers with a staring grin: "Monsieurs, --I thank you for the polite and flattering encomiums, You are pleased to bestow on me--I thank you in the Name of the Young Prince, Whoes Charms are Inexpressible. and regret that he can not add his personal sentiments to those which I entertain, to the--Legislative Body." Napoleon (left) watches the homage from behind a curtain which divides the child's throne from women who are washing the infant's napkins; he holds up a forefinger and stares intently. A disreputable old woman washing a tub-full of 'Shi--en Clouts' also watches; her tub rests on a low stool under which a dog urinates, and on which are bottle, glass, and snuff-box. Another, behind Napoleon, hangs 'Royal Clouts' on a line in front of a steaming copper. She says, "The Stench from the Young Urchin is intolerable--he smells like a pole Cat."
