Painted glass with Walpole arms and English stained glass panel depicting the Walpole coat-of-arms
Description:
The portion of the stained glass that was formerly at the top of the five windows in the Gallery, which includes the quarterings of the Family of Walpole, embellished by a variety of old mosaic glass. Formerly located in the Gallery of Strawberry Hill. The areas of glass which today appear clear had been painted in Walpole's time with blue enamel, probably once with blue florets. Remnants of the enamel can be seen in several sections, notably along the bottom edge. This piece was placed in the window opposite the chimneypiece -- from "Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill.", Title devised by curator., Text from the 1774 and 1784 editions of Description of the villa of Horace Walpole, youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole Earl of Orford at Strawberry-Hill: 64 [Gallery]. In the windows, painted by Peckitt, are all the quarterings of the familyic glass, the size of each, 3 feet 6 inches wide by 1 foot 6 inches high., Text from the 1842 Catalogue of the classic contents of Strawberry Hill collected by Horace Walpole: The beautiful old stained glass at the top of the five windows in the Gallery, which includes all the quarterings of the Family of Walpole, very rich in colour, and embellished by a variety of fine old mosaic glass, the size of each, 3 feet 6 inches wide by 1 foot 6 inches high., and Also available as a digital reproduction.
