The first character blows a horn, carries a violin and bow in his hands and on a string around his waist another horn with smoke coming out hangs over his behind; he is wearing spectacles and a scarf aroung his head as well as a Roman-style pink dress; he has wings and appears to have a breast. In the text above his head: En avant la renommeé? Sur l'air: j'ai du bon tabac, dans Misantropie et repentir. The second figure is wearing Roman armour and carries a long-handled pan; he has claws for hands, a bird's face and tail feathers. On top of his helmet sits a rat. The text above his head reads: Tais toi! Geulard, vilain menteur de Constitutionel; j' t'ai dis que l'premier qui tomeroit sous ma griffe, il aura beau crier ... la mort ... aura.." The third figure with a large belly has a highly caricatured face with large, exaggerated features and fangs; he wears a bonnet. He is armed with a knife hanging in his belt as well as a long sword on a chain. Above his head are the words: Mais, mon Capitaine t'as dis qu't' allois les prendre en flanc j' l'aime bien, moi, l'flanc, tu m'en donneras? .. ain!" The fourth and fifth figures both have wolf-like faces. The one also has a tail and carries a hoe and a basket with a second wicker basket on his back. The writing above his head, " Qu' est-ce qu' en veut? Des lettres de falaise, en voulez vous d' la Chicorée?" The other's clothes are tattered and short, with a sash around his waist; he wears a straw hat and smokes a pipe. "John Bull sits in a double pair of stocks, his ankles heavily shackled. His wrists are linked by a huge padlock inscribed Million £800 000 000 [National Debt]. He sits on bales of Taxes; to his back is tied a huge bundle of Last Wars Taxes. His clothes are tattered; three pockets hang inside out, inscribed To Let. At his side (left), and in profile to the right, kneels a noble Spaniard, in very theatrical dress, with trunk hose, cloak, and ruff. He has a spear from which hangs a pennant inscribed Libertas. He puts his hands together in a gesture of prayer: I come once again, and on my kneens [sic] to implore your Aid, we are indeed grateful for former Services, and beleive that you fought purely for Spain and not for yourselves--Save us from our pretended Friends they are worse then Enemies--Save us, and the World, from the destruction of Liberty--. John bites his thumbs despairingly; he answers: I pity you, but I can only give you advice, when you came to me before, I was a Strong Man, and free, but I am now exhausted in saving you, and destroying your great Enemy--See how I am fetter'd--! My Creditors enchain me--! look at my Debt and pity me!-- At his feet a heavy pair of leg-irons lies across many papers inscribed Debt and Taxes. He sits under an oak-tree; from a partly-withered bough hang his cartouche-box and bayonet-belt. In the middle distance (right) Louis XVIII sits astride a cannon (cf. British Museum Satires No. 12797), on a gun-carriage drawn rapidly up a slope by the Tsar and the Emperor of Austria. Both wear uniform and crowns, that of the latter topped by a fool's cap. Both cry: War! War!! War! and blood!! Alexander holds a sword in one hand, a bayoneted musket in the other; Francis holds a sword and a pistol, against his shoulder is the shaft of a flag inscribed Holy Alliance. Louis XVIII leans back, flannelled legs extended, two pistols in his belt, a sword in one hand, a musket in the other. Before him on the cannon is a bowl of soup, &c. The Pope walks at his right, holding a string attached to his nose. The King: By the Powers I shall fall, and lose my Balance Stop!! Stop! I say don't pull so hard you'll rupture [your scored through] Eu rope, this is not suited to my Taste [scored through] Gout I am already crippled and cannot bear it Stop!!!-- The Pope, who wears his tiara and holds his crosier against his shoulder, answers: Fear not, I'll let you into Heaven, through the back door my dear Son. "Queen Caroline as Lucifera sits in a coach made up of objects which figured in the evidence against her. The driver is Bergami, whip in hand (thus representing Satan) on a high box seat; he turns to hand a bottle of wine to the Queen who holds a sack inscribed '50,000' [see British Museum Satires No. 14145]. The beam or chassis is a cannon (see British Museum Satires No. 13850), on this rests the body of the open coach, the front part being the prow of a boat (the polacca, see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the centre part a tub, representing the bath, see British Museum Satires No. 13819, the back part, half of the body of a travelling-coach, is surmounted by half a conical tent (see British Museum Satires No. 13818), the whole making a canopy over the Queen. On the tub-section a coat-of-arms is represented by a diamond-shape blank (hatchment-wise) with two supporters, Bergami and the Devil. Motto: 'Ama et Aude'. The six animals harnessed single file and their riders are adapted from the 'Faerie Queene', relevant quotations being etched below, in eight compartments. The procession advances from the right, down a slope towards a slough, on the verge of which the leading animal, an ass, has fallen, throwing its rider, Alderman Wood in his livery gown, who has dropped two large stacks of papers: 'Addresses ready made' [cf. He grasps a moneybag inscribed 10,000, and holds the ear of a fox which crouches against his knee. He faces John Bull who is stripped to the waist, with a gigantic leech on his back. John, a countryman in patched breeches, registers angry terror and pain; he looks over his shoulder, exclaiming: "D--me what a monstrous Leech! it not only sucks blood but honor also!" Leach says: "I am not plain, Leech, Sir, but by vulgar denomination--I am called Miss Leech if you please--." Beside J. B., and pointing menacingly towards him, are the muzzle of a cannon, a sheaf of bayonets in a chest inscribed 'G R' and 'Steel Lozenges' [see British Museum Satires No. 13513].
