Merino proposes several methods for American women to befriend and mentor immigrant women, who, in Merino's opinion, struggled to learn English and fully assimilate because they rarely socialized outside their homes and immediate families. Merino suggests several methods for "home teachers" to teach immigrant women basic English vocabulary, including visting them in their homes, establishing mothers' clubs, providing health and hygiene advice, and taking an interest in the cultures and customs of the immigrant women
