Abstract:
At the Gate of Calais, a fat monk is shown poking a very large side of beef carried by a thin cook; the label indicates that the beef is intended "For Madm Grandsire at Calais." On either side are two French soldiers, one of whom spills his bowl of thin soup as he gazes in amazement at the beef. In the foreground on the left, three market women with crosses hanging from their necks admire a skate in a basket of fish; on the right, two ragged men carry a large pot of soup while another drinks from a bowl, and a Scottish soldier cowers beneath an archway; in the middle distance, to left, Hogarth himself is seen sketching at the moment when a soldier's hand takes him by the shoulder; beyond, through the gate, is a religious procession

Abstract:
At his trial before Felix the Roman Governor of Judea, a very short St. Paul stands on a stool so as to be seen. The stool is steadied by a fat angel who is fast asleep and so unaware of the angry looking dog who wears a collar etched with the name 'Felix'. In this state an imp has been added under the stool on which Paul stands; he is sawing through one of the legs of the stool. He stands addressing a gallery filled with people in Dutch dress. On the left behind a curtain the orator Tertullus tears up his speech; at his feet a demon pieces the fragments together. On the right Justice is shown as a fat woman who is not blind, one eye is not covered by the blindfold, in her left hand are the scales and in her left a butcher's knife. All the faces are caricatured; many of the audience hold their noses. In the distance can be seen boats on a river and a windmill

In the street outside the Thavies Inn, Holborn, the coach driver Tom Nero beats the horse that has collapsed under the weight of the overturned coach, having been overloaded with four lawyers who try to scramble out the door. To the right in the foreground, another man beats to death a sheep. Behind him in the mid-distance a sleeping drayman runs over a small boy with his cart loaded with barrels. To the left a driver uses a pitchfork to prod a donkey burdened with two men, a barrel, and a large trunk on its back. In the distance, a crowd of men follow a bull being baited by a dog. On the side of the building on the left, broadsides advertise a cock-fight and a boxing bout between James Field and George Taylor at Broughton's Amphitheatre

A re-working of Hogarth's self-portrait of 1749 (Paulson 181); the artist has been replaced by a bear representing Charles Churchill wearing preaching bands and holding a tankard of beer in one paw and a knotty club in the other; the knots in the club are labelled 'Lye 1, Lye 2, Lye 3 ... Fallacy, Lye 10 ... ". The oval canvas rests on two books, on top is 'Great George Street : a list of the subscribers to the North Britons' and below 'A new way to pay old debts, a comedy by Massenger.' The dog Trump is urinating on a copy of Churchill's "Epistle to Hogarth". In an alcove on the right in an untidy garret, a man in a dressing-gown scratches his head as he writes on a sheet with the title "Riches a Poem". In the center of the image his wife is seated as she mends a pair of breeches; at her feet a cat and her kittens are curled up on the man's coat. Under the sleeve of the coat on the floor is an issue of "Grubstreet Journall." She looks to the door on the left where she is confronted by a milkmaid who holds a lengthy tally; the daisies in her bonnet suggest Michaelmas day when bills are due; she also is shown with a yoke across her back. Just inside the doorway a dog snatches the single pork chop from a plate on a chair; the cupboard above the door stands open to show empty shelves. Behind the poet, a baby lies in a bed crying. Above the poet's head is a print 'A View of the Gold Mines of Peru." Above the mantel is a "dare for larks" -- a circular mirror surrounded by eight smaller circular mirrors
