Below, an elderly military officer without sword or gorget, scowls through an eye-glass at a pert boy (right) in uniform with sword and gorget. "The Duke of York (left) and the Prince of Wales (right) stand one on each side of a church door, each holding out a collecting-plate, and each saying, "Pray remember the poor Charity Children of St Jams parish". Behind, a crowd of men leave the Church, Pitt holding out a plate to them, saying, "What is £130,000 pr Ann when you consider the price of provisions & other things pray remember." Three labels rise from the heads of the reluctant congregation (M.P.s): "I have disinherited my own Son for contracting Debts at Brothels & gaming Tables; At the last Charity Sermon both his Father & he promis'd. that he shd not become chargeable to the parish again"; "This Begging is made a Trade of". The tiny Duchess of York, also holding a plate, stands with her left hand under the Duke's arm, saying, "I was born in a strange Land of honest Parents, but their characters are neither here nor there pray remember". The Princess of Wales, three ostrich plumes in her hair, stands with her plate behind the Prince's back, looking at him reproachfully over her right shoulder and saying, "I came here naked & he hath half cover'd me pray remember". On the extreme right stands the stout Mrs. Fitzherbert in profile to the left, clutching papers inscribed '6000 Pr Ann' (see BMSat 8485); she says: "It's always good to have something in hand." The Duke of Clarence, wearing striped sailor's trousers and a cocked hat, stands on the extreme left with an infant (one of the Fitzclarences) in his arms; he holds a paper (or collecting-box): 'Mrs Jordans Night'. The infant holds a paper: 'For the Benefit of Mrs Jordan - a new Way to pay Old Debts the part of Sr Giles Overreach by Mr George, being his second Appearance in that Character.' (Massinger's comedy, revived several times in the eighteenth century.) The Duke looks down disconsolately as if aware that he would have no share in the collection but would be forced to rely on his mistress's earnings. In the background the King and Queen are seated on one horse as in BMSat 6918, a sign-post pointing 'To Windsor'. The King says: "I never interfere in Parish Business they must provide for their own poor." The Queen says: "Charity begins at home Love who knows what we may all come to." (Cf. "A pugilistic encounter between the Duke of York (left) and Lt.-Col. Charles Lennox (right), both stripped to the waist. The Duke stands with both fists clenched, saying, "Come on my Lad! don't fall without a Blow! I'll tickle your Mazzard, if you dare to stand up like a Man!" Lennox, on one knee, clutches the arm of his second, the Duke of Richmond, saying, "O save me Nunkle! - O Lord! - O Lord! - O Lord! Your H--h--ss is above my Match! - O Lord - I'm not fit to fight any body above your Footman". Richmond puts out a hand to restrain his nephew, saying with an expression of alarm, "For heavens sake, forbear! we are nothing but a brood of Bastards! Bastards begot - Bastards instructed - Bastards in Mind - Bastards in Valour - in every thing illegitimate - we are neither of Blood, or of Honor, to cope with your Hi-h--ss!!" "Mrs. Clarke's house is on the right. A military officer (Wardle) wrapped in a cloak slips a purse into the hand of a meretricious young woman at the door, with a belt inscribed Favorit. Mrs. Clarke, her breast much exposed, leans from a window to look down at him. Two other men look from other windows. Above the door is a lantern inscribed: Now Exhibiting Wonders upon Wonders or Mrs Clarkes Puppet Show Which has given satisn to Po[ ? pulace] and Prince. Below this is a board: All the World's a Stage and Men and Women merely Players-- some play the upper some the under part, but chief Play that--most foreign to their heart. On the door: Knock and you shall Enter. On the wall (by Mrs. Clarke) is a sign for "Globe Fire Insurance". On the right the Duke of York walks away from the house; he wears a mitre and carries a crosier; a bishop's robe, on which are the words "Men have their Entrances & their Exits". Next to him walks an elderly lawyer (Adam) and a fat parson (O'Meara) hurries after him. Facing Mrs. Clarke's house is a row of houses: Prospect Row; old women, Maiden Ladies, watch from upper windows, as does an old man with a telescope who puts a grotesque head out of an attic window inscribed Peeping Toms Observatory. He says: O the Devil choak her he's Waddling in as Im a prying Croaker. Two cats fight on the roof; words issue from one of them: "Come what come may the Cat will mew. "On a small plateau on the top of a mountain the Princess of Wales (left) reaches up to kiss the Prince of Wales (right), who has the body, horns, and beard of a fat goat. He kneels on one knee, his forelegs round her waist; her arms are round his neck. A star and ribbon are indicated on his body. She wears her coronet with three tall feathers, and her draperies swirl about her. In the middle distance are two rocky pinnacles; on one (left) three men dance hand in hand: Loughborough in back view wearing his Chancellor's wig and gown, the Duke of York wearing a cocked hat and his star, and Lord Cholmondeley. From the other, Lady Jersey (with the arms and legs of a goat) staggers backwards, she has horns, and three feathers fall from her head. Lord Jersey, with the body of a goat and long horns, is about to fall. They are being hurled from the rock by thunderbolts inscribed with the words 'What? - What? - What?' (the King's well-known phrase) which issue from heavy clouds, showing that it is the King who has overthrown them.
