Abstract: "The King, dead drunk and much dishevelled, is carried to bed by three fat and tipsy peeresses, wearing coronets; the foremost, who supports his legs, probably Lady Conyngham (cf. British Museum Satires No. 13847), says: "I'm as great as the Queen." The other two, one flourishing a candle, the other a full glass, sing: "We'll drown her in the bowl the bowl" [cf. British Museum Satires No. 12181]. Behind them is a table with decanters and a melon; a bottle is in the King's chair; broken bottles lie on the floor. On the right is the bed; in a chamber-pot are papers: 'The Queens Affair' and 'State Papers'."--British Museum online catalogue

Mounted (with one other print) on leaf 32 in volume 2 of the W.E. Gladstone collection of caricatures and broadsides surrounding the "Queen Caroline Affair."
Date "12 Dec. 1820" written in ink in lower right corner. Typed extract of two lines from the British Museum catalogue description is pasted beneath print.
Provenance: Sold by London's Dulau and Company to the New York City bookseller Ernest R. Gee in 1928. Earlier ownership by W.E. Gladstone is suggested by a manuscript note from Dulau formerly laid into the front the first volume (now in the object file), which states that "These came from the Gladstone Library at Court Hey, Broad Green. The manuscript notes written below the caricatures are in the handwriting of W.E. Gladstone." William Reese Company; February 2024.
